Again this forum comes thru for me. I was so close to purchasing a fuel sending unit but after reading some of the posts here I decided to make one more check for a bad ground. I found that my entire gas take was not grounded. I was so convinced that I needed a sending unit. It seems that the previous owner did an off frame restore and rustproofed the car. The problem seems to be that all that rust proofing doesn't allow for any metal to metal contact in order for the gas tank to be grounded to anything. I simply connected a ground wire via a small clamp from the gas tank to a grounded area and walla, the guage no works. Someone was right grounds and vettes, enimies. Thanks again forum.

There you go! Now more:beer money!

Isn't it great when there's a happy ending.:upthumbs

Is the ground wire missing from your sending unit? There should be two connections on the sender - one is a tan wire that goes to the gauge, and the other is a spade connector that accepts a connector from the rear harness with a black ground wire (same ground common for all the rear lamps). The tank itself doesn't need to be grounded - just the sending unit ground connection.

My spade connector tab rusted away and I just put a eye connector on the wire and put it under a screw head. Probably be good for another 27 years

I have a the tan wire but I don't see anything that looks like a tab. I was actually looking for something like that. I even thought about attaching a ground wire to the metal fuel line coming from the sending unit but the meter suggested it wouldn't work. Either way I sure am happy to spend about $3 in material and fix the problem. Thanks again.
