Well I broke down and pulled out the Heater Core. What a pain in the rear!!! It took me all morning just to pull most of the dash out. Lucky I had help. There is one screw that is a huge pain in the butt to get too. Then I spilled some coolant on the floor, Glad I had plastic bags down. I manged to get everything back in thinking yes no extra parts! (Always a concern when taking parts off). Well I found 1 screw on the carpet. DAMN! I was torn between taking things off to find out where it went or just throwing the screw in the tool box. mmmmm Tool box it is. All said and done, it took me almost 15 hours to do it. Might have been sooner if I did not take that 2 hour lunch break at Hooters.

You pulled the whole dash out, right? What kinda symptom gave it away? Did you not have heat or was it leaking?

p.s. Welcome back from Iraq!

Eric, thanks! Its great to be back. I was told last week that I might end up back in Kosovo next summer. That would make 6 deployments in 7 years for me.

Yea I pulled the dash. NEVER again will I do that. The inside of the car started smeling like coolant and the windshielf kept fogging everytime I turned the car on. The one I took out was in bad shape. I had a friend whos core went out on his 94. He started his car and then splash! Coolant dropped out of his dash and onto his floor.

I can't believe you only took 2 hours for lunch at Hooters!:L:L:L

I had to get the Vette done! Now if it was the Jeep, I might have taken 2 hours of work and 13 hours at Hooters!!!:L

my heater is out, im having the winshield fogging/antifreeze smell and a reallly bad leak (but as far as i can tell on the outside of the car).

I dont have the time to replace the heater core, you make it sound hard. I live in miami.... i dont want a heater.

My question.... can i just cap off the 2 lines that run to/from the heater. I wanted to get some form of U shaped hose or pipe, but thats turned out almost impossible to find.... so i want to just cap them off.

can i do this.

thanks
-chris

You should be able to cap the lines. Since you are in Miami, I bet you wont need it much. I wouldnt really say its hard to replace, just really time consuming.

u-pipe

A plumbing store (or hardware) will have copper pipe elbows. Use one 'ordinary' elbow and one 'street-L' soldered together to make a nice compact u-shaped pipe. Hose clamp the hoses securely. You could use plastic pipe the same way but be sure to ask for 'CPVC' as it will tolerate the temperature and ordinary PVC will not. The copper stuff is safer and easy to make.

Heater Core

Ub2slow. I'm glad to hear you lucked out amidst our current world tensions. Good luck to you and that red Vette is beautiful. Militant x, on your heater core, I've by-passed the the core by simply removing one line and looping the other. There is probably a size difference 1/2, 5/8, but I make it work. I've done it on a c3 with no problems. The pipe loop will work also. Just my .02. Bye

This guy is amazing. Not only does he risk life and limb fighting halfway around the world, but he can also chance a Corvette heater core without left over parts.:beer I don’t know which accomplishment is more miraculous.;LOL Maybe you deserve the GM’s equivalent to the Bronze Star. Good work solder. ;)

UB is just an @$$ kicking machine!:L:L:L He goes over to Iraq, kicks @$$ and then comes back here to do the same thing.:BOW

Alright fellows, take it easy. I might start believing you. :L I still cant believe all I had left over was one screw. Last time I had a dash apart I had several screws, bolts, washers and a couple of plastic thingies.

That happens to me all the time. I always say to myself, "I wonder where this came from. Is it important? Oh well, there's only one way to find out.":L So far, I haven't had anything fall off while I've drove so I'm assuming that it wasn't important. I'm sure that I've saved some weight with those leftover parts.:L:L:L
