1987 Not a Sh*tbox anymore
Hey everyone,
So I bought an 87 with both lights fixed in the upright position. I put new gears in both. The right side was sluggish and needed some help to retract. I took it apart (disassembly #2) and cleaned the brushes/armature. I eventually found that one of the magnets had loosened up (hence the lack of oomph) so I JB welded it back in place. Now the headlight really flips fast, but only closed. It will not open. Other side works fine. Any input? I am on disassembly #7, but who is counting.
My gut feel tells me something is messed up in that little switch type mechanism but it all looks kosher.

I know that there is some difference between the headlight system on an '87 and an '88 so my information might not be valid for an '87.

On the '88, there is a headlight control module that has a 4 Pole, Double throw relay. If one of the contacts is not making on this relay, it will cause what you describe. On the '88, this module is mounted to the front, left wheel well. You really need a wiring diagram if you don't already have one. Then you can trace to see where you are not getting voltage.

Hope this helps,
