Okay, I'm changing the oil today. Let out the drain plug, it's going well. Then I try to get the filter off, but it just won't budge. I have the filter wrench, but it was just bending and digging into the oil filter.

Please, is there anything else I can do to get this oil filter off? I have the filter wrench with the teeth (they were doing a number on the oil filter), and tomorrow I'm going to pick up a belt filter wrench and try that out.

But, please, any ideas on what I should do? It's stuck...really stuck.

Thanks!

worst case - I had to drive a flat screwdriver through one and use that to turn it off...

You are turning the right way, right??? (Been there, done that :D)

I guess if worst comes to worst, that is what I'll have to do. And yes, I'm turning it the right way. :) I thought the same thing. I even stared at it for about 2 minutes trying to put a clock as the oil filter, and getting it counter-clockwise. :D

Any other ideas?

Thanks! :D

If it's not too late (i.e. holes or chushed filter) you might try warming up the engine.

Stallion: Filter comes off Clock-Wise. Left-To-Right, Etc. Save your money & take a big screwdriver & drive it through the filter & twist the darn thing off. Those filters get stuck on if they're not properly greased (oiled) at the rubber gasket (top of the filter). If & when you do get the filter off, just make sure you put a little oil on the rubber sealing gasket & don't over thighten the new filter. Hand tighten as good as you can & then, maybe a quarter-turn with the wrench. That should do it. Another tip: Before installing the new filter, pour some oil into the filter (I usually dump in enough to make it a little over half full). This puts oil right in the filter to go to the bearings as you first start the car up after changing the filter & until the other oil can get to the filter from the pump. This little trick helps prevent some wear on those bearings. And Chevy motors have vertical filter mounts so you can do this (unlike Fords & mopars). Good luck & take care.

Been there done that!

I spent days figuring out mine, after I bought my Vette I did an oil change but the last guy couldn't have oiled the gasket, bent my oil wrench, stuck a screwdriver through it, it just shredded the metal the whole way around. I ended up bying this little do-hicky that looks like a bicycle chain attached to a socket (I guess its called an oil filter wrench, doesn't look like one), shoved it to the top of the filter put on an extension gave it a crank with my socket wrench and man what a relief it came off with ease. Try it... I feel your pain.:mad :r :)

I don't THINK SO!!! Looking at the filter, COUNTER clockwise, right to left will loosen it or "Lefty Lucy, Righty Tighty". I do agree with the rest of your post as far as lubing the sealing surface and pouring fresh oil in the new filter.

Well, I can't warm up the engine, because all the oil is drained out. I turned it the correct way, so that's not it. I'm going to hold off on driving a screw driver into it yet. And I'm going to see what I can find at SEARS.

Any other ideas?

I got it off!! I tapped the filter with a hammer, just to break the seal. Gave it a good twist with the wrench, and it budged. So I kept working on it in that manner. Finally got it off. :D

The oil is changed!! :D

Thanks for the help!!!! :)

Keep one of those inexpensive Sear strap wrenches handy. The best thing is the metal strap wrenches.

Rowdy1: OK.......OK.......OK What was I thinking? :duh Must of been the last oil change I did, I was standing on my head! ;LOL But, seriously, I was just seeing if everyone was paying attention to my post. :_rock Guess I know better now. :BOW One other thing I forgot to mention: Most of the 70's 350 vettes came with a smaller (approx. 1/2 quart size) filter. My suggestion is to use a full size quart one, in it's place. I've been doing that since I've owned mine. Also, I've known guys that will even use the larger "2 quarters" that GM puts on the commercial trucks. I figure the bigger the filter, the more oil passes through it & the longer it takes the filter to become completely blocked by particles.

BTW: Has anyone ever tried the "pancake-style" filter? the little thin one that is real thin; holds no oil at all & is suspose to catch even the smallest particles in it's screen. I would think that this filter would get "clogged" real quick & be by-passed quickly. Any thoughts on this? So, disregard my "screw-up" about taking that filter off & everything will be cool!:cool

That's the ditty that I grew up on. My father always said this. :D

Should be "Lefty loosy, righty tighty" but whose counting. Just don't try this on your bicycle pedals.

SMOOTH...

Nice recovery Dave;) Stallion, I knew you'd get it. I may have missed it and you but did you make it to Carlisle?:confused

another suggestion . get an oil filter wrench that cups the bottom of the filter. most have a hole for a ratchet to fit into.
also you can use an A/c delco filter PF-35 its longer and gives you more oil. just be cautious of the clearance below

When you install the new filter, only hand-tighten it in place. If you use the filter wrench, as the seal swells it's going to lock in place, and you'll be back where you started with this thread. Once again, been there, done that! I tighten the filter as much as I can by hand, and it's never come loose.

I did only hand tighten it. Hopefully next time I won't have this problem. :D

Yes, I was at Carlisle, but just for Friday. It was great, but I didn't see any of you around. I picked up a late C3 antenna assembly, too. :)

Thanks! :D

Jam a screw driver thure the filter and twist ,and only hand tighten the new one

Sorry I missed You

Well, at least you got there and got your antenna. Next year you have to plan on coming for a longer period of time.
