Anyone have any experience with this? 96 coupe. Automatic trans. Transmission shifts flawlessly. Shifter moves from park thru reverse neutral to (O)drive no problems. However, if I want to pull the shifter back further, there is a lot of binding to do this. It will go there, and it acts correct, but I shouldn't have to pull it back this hard to move the shifter. Also, in drive, the shifter seems to have a bit more "slop" than I would expect. I can move it for and aft maybe a half an inch. I have some thoughts on this, but I don't want to mention them here and bias the comments. Again, the tranny itself seems to have no problems, but the shifter seems like it is binding.

Perhaps you are in need of a replacement or repair of the shifter. My other thought is that the shift cable is failing.

Are you depressing the button down on the shifter all the way? If I have my shifter in OD, I can not move it into D, 2, or 1 without depressing the button on the shifter first. Then I can go through D, 2, and 1 without depressing it. That goes the same for Neutral into Reverse. I can go from Neutral to OD with no problems.

Mine did the same thing. It would not stay in first gear without holding it. It was almost like the boot was causing it to slip out. I didn't have the "slop" in drive though. Initially I took the center console apart and got down to where the shifter was mounted and moved it forward just a bit (maybe a 1/16") this helped. Pulling the boot up some helped also. The shifter mechanism is not really that sturdy of a piece. Once you look at it you will see what I mean. I was having some intermittent problems with the neutral saftey switch and tried adjusting the cable but I couldn't seem to get it exact. I ended up replacing the whole shifter with a Hurst pistol grip Quater stick. This came with a new cable. The pass through where the cable penetrates has a cover with three screws (6mm?) that is a real PITA to get to, it sits way up under the center part of the dash (almost under the radio.) Once I complete the install I have yet to have a problem.
