Ok some may say they look silly, others may think its cool looking. I personally have always loved rear window louvers on any car. I don't see many 81's with them since I am sure most folks want to keep the stock appearance.

I am seriously considering adding a black ABS rear window louver to my Black on Black 81 corvette. I "think" it will add to the shark look, but I am sure there are a lotta opinions.

Please let me know about any personal experiances with them, or any comments on the look.

anything better out there?

They were VERY popular on Vettes and F-bodies in the late 70's and early 1980's. There is another style available that looks a little cleaner than the ABS plastic. They had a smooth appearance, almost like metal or aluminum... not sure what they were made of.

IMO... do not get the ABS style. Try and find the smoother surface louver. You asked ;)

Hmm they do have another one as well..... but since i could not see it on a car I was a bit worried. http://spoilers4less.com/wp10523.html
This one is Aluminum and may be the smoother one you mentioned.....Okie now I really need more opinions...lol I wish I could see a picture of this one mounted ..... I tend to agree , the ABS one sorta looks Camaro/Firebird looking.......(Didn't the Smokey and the Bandit car have rear louvers?...:) just checked...it did'nt oh well..

So I guess the question now is ABS or Aluminum with some ABS...... Any links to pics would be great and all opinions welcome...

When I bought my 'vette in '99 the previous owner included a lot of extra parts, one of which was Cragar rear louvers as seen in the last picture. Made out of mostly metal, the construction was okay, but the plastic pieces after a while just broke. It really helped with the sun problem, and it looked okay I suppose; all up to your personal taste. Definatly get an all metal construction if you can. Cragar stopped making them years ago I later found out. Good luck in what you decide on. Remember its your car, so if you like it then thats all that matters!

I like the look with the louver, but I have to agree with some of the others that the ABS one is not that appealing. I had a '77 Datsun 280Z new in '77 that came with an aluminum louver. It looked great. When I got the vette, I wanted to get one just like the one on the Z, but I couldn't find one made of all aluminum. I opted for the shaded plastic piece that is sold in some of the parts catalogs that fits inside the rear window.

My 80 has always had one on it since i got it. I got married last Sunday and they put a cardboard on it and the whole thing blew off. I was real afraid that i wouldnt be able to buy another one and i thought that it was original, but i guess it was added by someone. Mine had aluminum middle and side plastic. I really like the way it looks, i have big speakers in the back and it hides them real good. I sure hope if i get another one, that i can see out the rear view mirror as good as i could with my old one.

I've had them on my last 3 78's. I love them; They look good and help keep the inside cool in the hot weather. I wouldn't be without a set on a C3 now.

All of the ones I've had were the two piece type. Never a problem out of any of them. Louvers are COOL.

Louver hinge replacements

I like the look ! The functionality is nice as well. I bought my vette with ABS louvers... They are hinged to allow easy window cleaning.. but the bolt threads are stripped.. and I'd like to replace the whole hinge.

Anyone recognize this brand? there are two hinges, each with two 10-28 threaded rivets on the aluminum hinge. The hinge wedges under the window trim.

Drquazar,
I'm planning on getting them in the next week or so. If I don't see something I like at Carlisle, I'm going to order those. I replaced my 'blackened' seats and my faded to pink and orange carpet, so now everything is dark red again, and I want it to stay that way. Oh, and I also got the fiberglass T-tops, so it's a little less like a greenhouse! Should look like the one in the pic, as my car is black also.
