just wondering are you happy with it? I am thinking about switching engines and I am kinda thinking about this one it is 355hp and 400+ for torque that is not bad at all I don't think...I am just looking for a good street motor that can be drivin anyone have any thoughts on this??

Thanks,
John Dykstra

John,

There are quite a few guys running ZZ4's in their C4's. They've had nothing but good things to say about them. You should maybe try checking out the C4 forums as well? Maybe someone has written about the ZZ4 over there as well.

John,
I made the switch to the ZZ-4 very nice.
If you need any help I'm in Madison.
Tom

I would recommend highly, I get great performance and reliability... it's what the car should have had in the first place.

silver 80: I may just take you up on that offer not sure when as I have the whole car taken apart because I am changing the color of the car but sometime this summer I am hoping to place the order...

So it seems to be a good engine...got enough torque to light the tires?? not that I would ever do that...:)

John-
I'm in that same thought process for my 69. I've done a decent bit of research and I'm 95% sold on the following:

Stock ZZ4- (Can always add on the solid perf engine)
Doug Thorley Headers(low end torque header)
VBP Perf Plus Suspension ( Should be able ot handle the new mods)
ROD 6 Speed. My M20 tranny is on it's way to shot. Why not make it fun too.
Don't have to change to Big block hood but will.
And of course other odds/ends like bettrer starter, radiator, etc

I'm still WAY short on affording such a switch from my mostly stock set up now, but I'm still saving. If I end up doing it all at once, I am on target for End of April -May 2004.

Yeah the ZZ4 rules. it'll light up the tires. If you do a doughnut, it'll smoke 'em so bad you can't see where you're going! :L

Oh my goodness!! :eek :eek

:D What kind of power does the ZZ4 put out? Sounds like a nice deal, I think.

Does anyone have a zz4 installed that still passes emission tests (if you have them in your area)? Will putting in a zz4 and installing the AIR components from my 81 keep it legal? Thanks. Tom:confused

I did the stock conversion!

JohnD,
As I already replied in your "which carb" post, I'll say it here again though because it's fun to talk about.

The ZZ4 is 355hp and 405lb/ft torque. Yes, it'll light the tires up without much problem. It all depends on your transmission setup and how sticky your tires are.

I'm running a tuned/jetted QJet, 4" K&N filter, Hooker headers, and straight back exhaust (and essentially no mufflers). With my worn TH350 (3.08 rear), I was able to light the tires up pretty much all the time (255's in the rear). Sometimes it wouldn't, but I think that was due to a worn trans and tq converter. Nonetheless, once I was rolling, I was rolling! I have a clip of me doing 104 @ 13.44s in the qtr mile. That's not too shabby for a direct swap engine (almost direct). Once I have my 700R4 trans put in, I'm thinking(hoping) I can break into a 12.9s qtr as well as have a top speed over 150mph. I'm already confident of the top speed. But the 12.9x in the qtr is going to be close...

A quick note since I didn't mention it the "carb" post, you may also need to change the water pump. The wp that came on the ZZ4 was too long. I had to put on my original wp, but that was no biggie for me since it was already an aftermarket hi-po wp.

Oh yeah, another great thing about the ZZ4 (and just about ANY 350...), it's not to difficult to build it up to the ZZ430 specs (and beyond!). Next year ('05) I'll be doing that conversion. Hehehehe...<rubbing hands together menacingly>

I am definately doing the swap just the engine is up in the air...I know a guy that builds engines and I asked what it would cost to build a zz4 type engine and this is what he came back with....

I can build you a 350/400HP for your 81 Corvette. Here is a few of the details about the engine.
*Pro-Top Line Alunimum 200 cc Runners with 2.02" & 1.600" stainless valves with undercut stems to improve flow.
*Screw-in rocker studs with guide plates
*Roller Rockers
*4 Bolt main block In your case I will build it with thedipstick on the pass side to make it match the original better
*Steel crank with 4.84" stroke
*Comp cam .500" valve lift, 270 Duration, 224 Duration @ .050" ground on a 110 Lobe center
*Harden seats for use with leaded or unleaded fuel
*Bronz guides
*Harden push rods
*Double Row timing set
*High Volume oil pump with welded pick-up screen and steel shaht with steel guide
*1 piece oil pan gasket to prevent oil leaks
*Brass freeze plugs
*Edelbrock Dual Plane Intake manifold
*We can paint it what ever color you would like. We paint everthing seperately so it has that show quality look.
*Engine would be assemble with oil pan, timing cover, harmonic balancer, Alunimum heads and Alunimum Intake manifold, along with chrome valve covers.
Because you were looking at the ZZ4 engine I am going to assume your 81 Corvette has a A.T. With our 350/400HP you can re-use your stock flywheel and torque convertor. From the time I receive payment it takes 7 to 10 business days to custom build you a 350/400HP from scratch. It is $3195 and I will ship it to your home or business with FREE SHIPPING in the continental U.S. You can send me a cashiers check or money order or just call me with your credit card. My phone # is 602-395-0800. We are open 8:00 to 5:00 MST Mon to Fri. We will closing early today Dec. 24 [Christmas eve] at noon. We will be open 8:00 to 5:00 Fri. the 26th.
Thanks Darl

Not to bad I do not think...

One more ZZ4 here

I put mine in about 55K miles ago. Been real happy with it. I did swap over to my own version of fuel injection - an S&P Tunnel Ram, 24# SVO injectors and Accel 6.0 computer. My seat-of-the-pants tells me it's lost a bit of bottom end torque with the Tunnel Ram intake but it'll still light 'em up. I would like to put in a cam that will take advantage of the shorter runner tunnel ram but no time to mess with it yet. It's my work beater.

good luck
