has anyone used the mini ram intake manifold from tpis....if so any info and rather it was a good buy or not please let me now

I'll state that I do run one, but I'll let Chris (69MyWay) expound on its virtues. :CAC

hey, thanks for the reply...looks like it would a real good buy...i've had my vette for almost a year now...and being 18 i just finally got me a daily driver so i can really fix up the vette...it wasn't the best taken care of by the frist owner...someone should beat him for that one...anyways, if anyone has got any great ideas let me know...the only thing done to it is a shift kit for the tranny and a bigger cam....not sure what size it is but it's there....thanks

Rolland,

With any one major mod, you must match it with all other components to get the most bang for your buck.

Grumpyvette is a member here and he has experimented with several different intakes. He likes the miniram, but prefers the stealth ram after making mods so that it will fit under the hood.

As far as the MR (miniram) goes, it is the ultimate bolt on improvement to a L98....IF, you have the gear to match it. If you have 2.** rear gears, and an auto trans, you will only see a benefit up high on the highway, and top speed. If you have a 3.08 or greater rear gear, and a stick...you will be blown away at the difference.

To top off the miniram you need headers, exhaust, free flow air filter, and solid lower gears to let it get up to the higher RPM faster.

So, before you spend any cash, lay out your plans well, and make a comprehensive plan. A stock 87 L98 with an auto and 2.77 rear gears could outrun a miniram 87 with the same trans and gears in the short run. However, the 87 with the miniram and good gears will smoke a stocker no matter what it has for gears or trans.

Chris,

Don't forget the Aftermarket Cam and Heads to match to the Miniram.

If fact Terry from TPIS said they built a 350 SBC.. 3.48 stroke, 6"rods, GM Fast Burn Heads, Miniram, 52mm TB, and the ZZ409 with 11:1 comp. and made some pretty good power (420FWhp I think)

Rolland,

I also have a Miniram, 52mm TB, ZZ9 Cam, CNC L98 Heads, 3.48" Stroke Cast Steel Crank, Headers, Dual 2-3/4" exhaust, 6spd, and 3.45 gear. I have not dyno'ed it, but I have run a 12.68 @110 int he 1/4 and would guess my FWHP around 400 as well.

thanks for everyone's input...keep them coming...my vette is an auto...so other then the diff. gears...how can i impove the feel of the low end...because that is where i want it the most myself....i've thought of looking into trying to change mine to a manual trans...is that more trouble then it's worth...and should i just maybe see if i can sell the one i have and then get one that was more taken care of and a stick....

Definitely more trouble than it's worth. Also, if you plan on making some serious horsepower with your engine, the automatic transmission will need to addressed as well. The stock unit probably won't last long behind any kind of abuse.

Then there's the rear end itself; the unit for the automatic transmission is a Dana 36, while the manually shifted cars had a Dana 44, which is a little stronger.

Now that I've opened that can of worms, let's see what the others have to say about it. ;)

What about Lingenfelter's Super Ram? Someone on the board said that the Super Ram would probably be a better fit for the auto while the Mini Ram would be better off on a manual.

thanks for everyone's input on this...well i've allready killed one trans in this car...and when i had it rebuilt i had them put the best parts into it.....they put a perfromce kit in it...not sure which one...can't remember...and again thaks for the input and hope to hear much much more about this....i've read alot on here and learn more and more each time i get on here...

ok....i think i've decided to go with the mini ram intake....i will have around maybe $400 or $500 to still work with or now.....my question is what gears should i go with instead of the stock....i do go drag races alot..so the more low down power i get the better...can't wait to finally get to start on the vette...

You'll love 3.73s, and be happy with the cruising revs, but 4.10s will get you out of the hole quicker. :bu
