Bruce... thanks for the reply

1. Would you use HEDMAN's again if you redid your exhuast?
2. Did you do the install yourself... any probelms???
3. Noticeable gain in HP or gas mileage?
4. Was it worth the price?

I have a 79 L-82 with the stock exhaust manifolds with the A.I.R. tubes. I would like to get rid of these and replace the whole exhuast system. I was just looking for advice onthe HEDMAN's because a set have become available but I dont have any experience with this brand.

Thanks!!!

My shop installed them for me. Fitting them was a pain as the suspension needed to be lowered somewhat. They sound great though. I did many other upgrades so I am not sure how much of the power increase is due solely to them, but the rule of thumb is 20 - 25 additional HP and about equal torque. I am pulling them out now as I am going to install hooker header/side pipes.

I dont think you can go wrong.

Good Luck

Bruce

What are you going to do with your old setup???

Are the hooker headers a different size than the hedman's? I would like to keep sidepipes as an option and would hate to have to get 2 sets of headers.

Hooker pipes include a header that is sahped towards the side of the car.

I have Hedman headers. I love the sound. I'm running them into flowmasters.
Can't say much about the perf. I went to a big block. They look and sound great. Install was pretty easy tight for me with the bb. I have the ones flaring to the sides. Plan to put side pipes on later. .I had the flow masters on my small block....Doesn't even compare to the new sound. Set off people's alarms.

Doubt if I helped but if you have any questions I'll do my best.

As a former CA girl...

Lee, am I assuming correctly that you are building a non-street vette? I checked your profile and saw that you live in California, where the smog-nazi's are pretty strict.

I've changed my exhaust system since we moved to Georgia and we will never willingly move ourselves or the '78 back to CA. We love it here.
Especially the fireflies.
Heidi :w

(For the true firefly aficionado; I know they are really lightening bugs, but I like calling them 'fireflies'.)

*I changed my stock exhaust to 1975 rams horn (w/out air tubes) and chambered exhaust. I noticed an increase in sound and horsepower. Thought I lost torque, but it turned out to be my driving habits...to hesitant with the go-pedal since it sounded so much louder.

Mine will be a street VETTE. All I really need to do is get it smogged in the current stock format, then change it over to the exhuast I had planned. I am debating on whether to go with headers into true duals without cats or the sidepipe option.

I have a "good" friend who will help me out with the smog, so I dont have to worry about that once its done.

You lucky dog!

If we ever HAVE to move back to CA...can we call your friend too? (kidding, we'd need to find our own friend...)

A question about changing exhaust in CA.
I know that we are not supposed to tamper with the stock configuration of our exhaust, but if after the vehicle reaches 25 years of age...do we not get carte blanche?...or do we still have to keep the "stock look" and not have to take an actual sniffer test?
Heidi

Heidi,

The way the program works is the Feds mandate the minimum smog equipment and give the states the power to enforce. The states usually see diminishing returns and cut off the inspections after a certain period of time. This does not, however, relieve you of your responsibility to maintain the stock emissions as specified by the Feds, the states just quite looking.

Thanks Bob!

So...if something ever happend and we needed to move back to CA to be closer to family, the 78 could go with us and remain as she is.
(so long as no one looks under her)
That makes me feel better!

As of today all cars 73 or older are smog exempt in CA. Basically you can do whatever you want to, emissions wise, to these cars.

The CA smog check consists of 2 parts, a visual inspection and the actual emissions test.

Most CA owners must have their car smogged every other year.

What I plan on doing is getting my L-82 smogged with the stock setup and then replacing it with either headers into true duel exhaust without the cat or sidepipes.

When I have to re-smog it again in 2005, I hope that the law will have changed to include 79 and older vehicles.

Its a big gamble, I know. But gambling is in my nature
