My '72 has no AC but has Astro Venilation. I noticed that there is a hose that runs to a selinoid in the back below the rear venilation grills. What makes those grills' bottom vents "open up"? AND where would I find parts if I need parts for those?

The hose carries vacuum from the heater/ventilation control panel. If 'cold' is selected on one wheel and a position other than off is selected on the other, the vacuum causes the the actuator to open the doors under the grills.

Drawing of vacum system

Where could I get a drawing of the vacum system so I can start trying to find out why it doesn't work. Where would I get an actuator?

The Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM) shows the Astro-Ventilation installation, lists the original part numbers, shows vacuum hose routing, etc. Order the AIM.

The aftermarket providers carry some of the actuators.

The hose routing on a non-AC car is pretty simple and self evident. Test each component separately with a vacuum source to determine what needs to be changed.

Be aware also that even when working properly, the Astro Ventilation system is more show than go. :)

I am also working on the astro vent system in my (73) vette. Does anyone know how much the doors are supposed to open? Mine only seem to onpen maybe 1/4 of an inch.

Mine only open a little also and are stuck in that position. I am planning to try to fix but wonder if it's worth it.

Like a bicycle pump? Did you hook it up to the actuator under the rear window?

found it at the auto parts store for about $35 its also used for bleeding brakes. really helpful tool because it also has a gauge so you can see if its holding presure. i connected it to the vacum hose where the steel line connects to the hose behind the driver seat just before the actuator. Hope that helps.

I removed mine and just riveted some sheetmetal in their place and painted them black. A/C cars never had them anyway and my top is always down so I thought they were unneeded.
