The 2006 auto is a 6-speed with 3 modes - Drive, Sport and Paddle
Drive is the 'normal' mode - fully automatic operation with smoother shifts at lower RPM
Sport - Fully automatic operation with harder shifts at near maximum RPM
Paddle - Must be in Sport to start with then activate either paddle puts you in the Paddle mode. Once in Paddle, the paddles control the gear selection - manual gear selection. It will not upshift or down shift unless you tell it to except in the case of coming to a stop and not selecting the correct gear - it goes to second to keep the motor from stalling. To de-select paddle mode, you most move the shift lever out of Sport to anything else. If you put it back in Sport and then use the paddles, you're back in paddle mode. In Drive, the paddles are disabled.
David Hill says it i smart enough to know better than to down shift near redline so as not to over-rev the motor.
The seminars at the NCM are a great place to learn about the new cars and the changes made.
