I want to change my auto over to a 4 speed and talked to many people and never get the same answer twice. What are the differences between muncie 20,21,22,saganaw, borg warner,t-10 and super t-10?. Looking on ebay I have seen many word combo's describing 1 trans.Do I need to change or just adapt the cross member?

Why a 4 speed?

If you're gonna convert it, why not go to a TKO or a ROD unit? Just about anyone with a manual 4 speed wishes it was a 5 or 6speed. Ask anyone and they'll tell you they wish their 4 speed with 370's had an overdrive.

My $0.02

I agree. you would be turning some pretty hi revs cruising about 70mph

Here's some more information I posted in the General Tech Forum. 5-Speeds.

tranny conversion

tons of great info, thanks!!!!!!!!!!

You do NOT have to change the cross member.
Having a 5 or 6 speed would be better. I converted over in 1980 so all there was was a Doug Nash 5-speed. Very expensive in 1980. If I ever blow the 4-speed up, I would go to a 5/6 speed.

used 5 Speed?????

What about getting a later model 5 Speed from say a 85 Camero or Fire Bird/
Theese should be pretty easy to come by at a wrecker.
Would these bolt in and if any of you have done this I would love to know what is required.
You see I have a fairly hot motor with a th350 and 4.11 gears and as you can see I realy need the over drive. I have thought of the th200 and the th700 but both options are extreemly expensive and I don't trust a used one however a used 5 Speed is a better bet when buying used thats why I am looking down this path and oh yes a 6 speed is out of the budget this year as well.
Thanks in advance.

you dont want a t-5 (80's f-body M5 tranny). they cant handle power, i have heard about more T-5's breaking than any other trans. i have even seen them break under the power of a v6 f-body. if you have an L-48 car, or you dont put the petal to the floor much, then sure get a t-5, but if you want to race it, i wouldnt recomend it.

What would you recomend for a 5 speed then. Keep in mind I will be trying to find it in an auto wrecker
Thanks

The 5-speed was to light to take any kind of power. I would stick with the 4-speed. If you need to fix it, parts are around. It has been proven to stay together. Put the money in a good clutch and pressure plate.

I can't believe the information you've just given all of us.

It's fantastic. I've saved it all for this winter's project.

Thank you.
