Automatic Gearshift Removal Help

A guy I work with has an 86 automatic and needs to remove the gearshift knob but is not sure of the procedure. If he has to remove the push button on top or not and how to do so his concern is about spring popping out.

Take a small screwdriver and gently pry off the plastic button, then remove the snap ring inside on the shaft.

Yup Easy as pie.. Confused me the first time I looked at it..

this is what i did......

i took the smallest hex key i had, wedged it between the button and knob, turned the key so the small part was under the button and lifted. it takes some practice. theres a small "c" clip in there. be careful when removing that. the spring is underneath the console.
