I owned a 95 that had a feature where the doors would unlock automatically as you aproached the car without touching the key fob and would lock the doors automatically when you walked away from the car.

I can't find this on my 2004, is it there or did they delete this option?

Thanks

Stosh,
I remember reading about that feature in some later C4's. When I got my '03 Z06, I poured over the Owner's Manual and the video, and can find no reference to it as a feature included with the C5. I wonder if it developed flaws associated with it in the C4's, and was discontinued. Of if Chevrolet got negative feedback associated with it from owners for some reason.

Anyone have any insights on this?

My 98 has that feature, but I turned it off. I found it too unreliable.

Sometimes I would walk away from the car, no beep to indicate the doors locked.

I feel safer pushing the button myself when I get out so I know it's locked!!

Ron ... :w

My '97 had the feature, and I turned it off, too. I got tired of hearing the horn every time I walked into or out of the garage to take out the trash, get the mower, etc.

It was called Passive Keyless Entry, or PKE for short. I know it was available from '93 through '96 and I believe it was standard. The key fob had a BB for all intents and purposes in it. When you approached the car and the BB bounced around inside the fob, it closed the contacts within the transmitter and sent a code to the car to unlock the doors. My '96 had some problems and sometimes it would unlock the doors and sometimes not. The doors had no issues locking however as once the car stopped receiving transmissions from the key fob, it would lock the doors. I know the earlier C5s had the system, but I don't know when it was discontinued.

my 1999 coupe had it - but my 2001 Z06 does not

So it was discontinued, but was originally available in the early C5's. Interesting. I wonder if feedback about the system- similar to the feedback we're getting here- had a role in the decision to discontinue it.

I mean, if you're one of those who keep your spare keys hanging on a key rack just inside the garage door, and that location is close enough to register with the on-board computer, it's bound to create some domestic tranquility issues.

Feedback was not the best so GM dropped it. 99 was the end of 'passive keyless entry', at least until the C6 got here.

Our 93, 96 and 98 had it. We used it but it also got in the way many times. I remembered to turn it off when I washed the car or was working on it or it reminded me by honking the horn a lot and locking me out when I wanted in. Then, if I forgot to reset it, it would not lock the next time I drove it - leaving the alarm system off and the car 'unprotected'. Very annoying.

The new C6 has a passive system and keyless ignition. I hope is 'understands' better!

Thanks

That answered my question, Thanks all

my friends 99 had it but he did not have the system programed to blow the horn when it was activated. his battery kept going dead and he did not know why till i reprogramed the system to blow the horn. he found out then with the keys hanging in his kitchen every time they walked accross the kitchen floor the horn would blow. this was causing his battery to go dead because of all the lights flashing and the doors locking and unlocking many times each day
