I have purchased a new knob/button retainer/snap ring for my '87. The question is, how do I get the old one off? The Service Manual gives no clue.
Thanks, CAB:confused

On my 93 you pull out the push button then remove a circlip inside that holds the knob to the shaft. Yours may be similar.
Good luck

As I recall the spring on the push button is steel and over the years a little surface rust can cause the button to be stuck in place. A little prying and tugging should get the button off. Once I got mine off now I can just pull it off with my fingers.

Knob removal

After I removed the button and clip I put an adjustable wrench under the knob and used a hammer to tap it off. The knob will not twist off it is on a spline.

thanks tony long...
i got my shift knob off following your instruction...

There is no need for hammers, wrenches of channel locks. with a small to medium screwdriver pry up the push button it should slide off the push shaft with a little retainer (sometimes left behind on shaft or in button) use a small set of snap ring pliers remove the ring. Now granted I will say that the knob can be a little stuck from time but usually from spilled coffee or soda, but I have found that they usually come off with a little twist back and fourth and small hit of WD-40

FYI, there is also a snap ring removal tool. It looks like a pair of pliers with two small points that spreads with ring apart for removal.
