put in a pulley that replaces the air pump. less drag against the engines output, gain a few useable hp
looks like this:

They're $150

you can buy one and thats a valid option, but you can purchase the idleler pulley for about $20, or get one from a salvage yard for UNDER $10 , take a few careful measurements and use the WELDER YOU SHOULD HAVE IN YOUR SHOP to fabricate a very effective clone for well under $30
I MEAN ,COME ON GUYS!!! LOW TECH! easy project you can build with a welder and hand tools in under a couple hours:thumbsup:
WELDERS AND THINKING ARE ALMOST MANDATORY in a shop:thumbsup:
it doesn,t take long for a DECENT welder to MORE than recover its up front costs in savings in a shop!
youll save $100 plus on this one project, I can,t tell you how handy a decent welder in the shop is!:D
GOOD for most jobs in the shop

SLIGHTLY BETTER

PROBABLY OVERKILL, BUT I LOVE MINE

Mine just became history, what did you do with the diverter wires?

tape 'em up to prevent corrosion (just in case ever resto'd) and hide 'em in the little hole in the a/c compressor mounting bracket, just under the compressor.

So doing this buys you what and why do it in the first place, just curious

It cleans up the engine compartment, removes a couple lbs, from the car, and gains you a couple hp less drag on the engine

I got sick of having to either take it apart or work around it when I need to do something to the engine.

So Grumpyvette, there is actually no purpose for the Air Pump to be there ?

also better airflow thru the engine bay for better cooling, and can improve weight distribution by removing the belt driven pump from the front and substituting an lt1 electrically driven pump in the rear near the spare tire (belt drive pump/bracket = 9 lb.,elec drive pump = 3 lb)

of course, if you're only driving ''off-road'' you don't need any ''secondary air pump''

IN theory exhaust EMISSIONS are lower but I saw zero change when removing it after testing both ways

the a.i.r. pump is mainly for cold start warm up of the cat converter it blows air into the cat to make it lite off it is the same as a bellows blowing on a fire . only works at cold start :upthumbs Steve

G.M. would never have bothered installing it if under some circumstances it was not necessary and if you get the wrong inspector he could become a royal P.I.T.A., but Ive seen no advantage to having it and pass emmission testing just fine when we had to do that.

like grumpy said if you get the wrong inspector it could be a pita most states with in depth inspections are supposed to do a visual inspection if parts are missing it is a fail , you could gut the pump and have just about the same effect as the idler and a visual would pass;) steve

lt1's on 96 impalas came with an air pump, had epidemic failures, got fed approval to ''delete'' the air pumps in the field...even made a rad housing sticker to alert pita inspectors of ''approved'' delete.....??????????????????
