Back-up lights

One of my back-up (reverse) lights...the left hand side, on my 76 stays on when all the lights are turned on....even when I am going forward.

I have looked through my manuals but I haven't come up with where or what controls the back-up lights. I am assuming there is a switch off the transmission somewhere..my car is a 4 speed...similar to that on an automatic transmission, that switches the lights on when in reverse. (The other dilemma is why the right hand side back-up light doesn't come on as well..go figure?)

However, I haven't had a chance to crawl under the old Vette to take a look...was holding out to hear that the control was in the console panel....wouldn't that be too lucky to hope for!!

Correct.

As far as only one light doing it, the other probably has a bad bulb or connection, since they should be fed off the same wire. I can't be certain about your '76, but the wire on my '79 goes to one of the lights, then slices off the socket to go to the other. I don't know which is which, though. So, if it goes to the left first, and your right-side bulb and socket check out, you might have a bad wire between the two.

There's an (adjustable) switch on a bracket bolted under two of the trans side cover bolts; it has a rod that attaches to a hole in the reverse lever on the shifter. The backup light circuit is independent of any lighting circuits - should only come on when the switch is closed, whether the lights are on or not.
