backspacing question 87 - 96 wheel

hi all,

I'm wondering if 96 vette rims would fit on 87 convertible vette... here's the stats for 87:
1987 (base)
front & rear 16"x8.5" 32mm (6.0" backspacing)
Goodyear Eagle VR50, P255/50VR-16

here's the other:
1993-1996 (base)
front 17"x8.5" 56mm (6.9" backspacing)
Goodyear Eagle GSC, P255/45ZR-17
rear 17"x9.5" 56mm (7.4" backspacing)
Goodyear Eagle GSC, P285/40ZR-17

the backspacing is greater on the newer wheels but what effect will that have? Will the wheels fit and not rub on the wheel wells? Any experts who know or have tried to do this have any insight on this?

I'm thinking they might fit, just the wheels will stick out a little further?

The opposite.
The greater the backspacing on a rim of the same width ,the more it will have hanging inboard of the hub face ; as in it will stick out less

Will the wheels fit and not rub on the wheel wells?

If you refer to that same listing you will see the 96 GS had a 17 x 11
(50mm 7.9" back spacing )
fitted to the rear as stock so there are no clearance problems

Late wheels (88 - 96 ) bolt straight on to early (84 - 87 ) cars but require a adapter ( 3/4" most commonly used ) to sit them out in the stock position in relation to the wheel arches

Thanks Vetteoz... I was wondering the same thing. I have a 87 and want some new wheels but have found that most places refer to the 88 and later wheels. Looks like i need a set of spacers.

thanks for the info... found new wheels for good price but those spacers are 200 bucks ... duno if it makes much sense right now

You can buy some aftermarket wheels with the correct 84 - 87 offset
AFS for one ,do a ZR1 5 spoke copy in 9" and 11"; black or polished
