Who was faster in 1987? The GNX or the Callaway Twin Turbo:argue ?

I would have thought the Callaway, but a guy I met says he has an article that shows the GNX beating the Callaway?

This is easy. Faster as in *fast* is the Callaway. You wouldn't want to go 160+ in a G body.:D

The dood was just trying to get your attention. Callaways were the fastest car in the world in the late 80's :cool

I was gonna say - Must have been reading magazines again :Silly

The GNX has a unique rear axle that allows a better "plant" of the tires and the only thing I can think of is, they couldn't "hook up" the B2K :hb

TurboLuigi owns both a GNX and a Callaway Twin Turbo (1991) - FWIW, he sold his duplicate GNX shortly after purchasing the B2K, hmmmm :upthumbs I am sure he can shed more light on the subject :)

On a slightly related note... What is a GNX in nice shape worth these days?

Whoa! The bidding is at $38k and the reserve has not been met yet! The car does have less than 1200 miles on it, but still... isn't that a couple pesos over the orginal MSRP? Less than 500 made, right?

I read somewhere that Callaway couldn't get his car certified or something for the speed crown in '87, hence it went to the Buick. Watching one of those cars "climb the ladder" as they power up in the rear is pretty dang cool.

I love grand nationals those things are just so damn quick off the line. Its too bad they dont corner well. A guy in town has one of the craziest grand nationals ive ever seen ITS INSANE!

Here is your article - Scroll down to "Speed Thrills"

I'd say that these guys can't drive very well if the best they could do with either car is mid 13's at around 105. (A bone stock L98 Vette is a low 14 second car.) However, there is no question that the GNX with it's automatic transmission would make a better 1/4 mile car than a 4+3 equipped '87 Callaway TT.

Sorry Guys... I have been stuck on a work project in California.

For comparing 0-60 MPH on stock versions of both, the GNX will win. Its and automatic and the Ladder bar keeps the rear wheels planted and on the ground. However, 60MPH+ the Callaway catches up (on the stock car). Also remember the GNX is a 6 banger vs the Callaway being an 8 banger. So the GNX (and Grand Nationals) are impressive for that.

Additionally, I have seen modified Grand Nationals running 25 lbs of boost and lifting 2 ft off the ground on the 1/4 mile drag, which are 9 second cars.

One note, the Callaway as sleek and unique looking as it is does not get the amount of public recognition on the road as the Buick GNX.
