what is the best way to remove the battery bolts from the battery cables
on a side mount battery as the head of the bolts are stripped and i really don't want to change both cable as they are tough to get at. the cables are in great shape, just the bolts are hooped.

Can you get a vise grips on the end? You can buy just the replacement bolts, so if you can get the old ones off you should be all set. I use a small tool that is designed just for these battery bolts. It prevents messing up the ends.

I replaced the bolts on my cables by removing them with pliers. Pretty easy to do, and replacements are available at most auto parts stores.

I just grab the cable with both hands and push the bolts out with my thumb,
probably not the best way, but works for me

i use a mini puller to remove wiperblade arms and they pushed right out.
