Battery Change

Read earlier message I sent in reference to this Delco (AGM) Platinum Battery.

I really thought I found a good alternaive to the gel battery, and still stay OEM; I was very disappointed when I talked to them today! But there is a reason for everything even though we may not know what it is at the time, right? Thank you for being so thoughtful as to send me the web sites, and after reading the GM Tech page was conveinced this was what I was looking for and still stay original.

Below is a message I sent to DELCO, and their reply back to me, and then I called the 1-800-ACDELCO and talked to one of their customer relations people today, agent 33 as I remember.

Thanks again for being considerate,

I have been surfing your web site trying to found out about the NEW

PROFESSIONAL PLATINUM BATTERY. Didn't think this would be so difficult

these days. I need to know if it is a gell battery or something to that

effect. The reason is I want one for a Corvette and don't want the acid

problem. I also need to know how much they cost and any other information

that you think would be necessary. It is bad enough that GM installed

this over the ECM and other vital wiring, AC/DELCO made a battery that

leaked down on it. Are they one of the same? At anyrate I have aa 2000

C-5 Corvette and would like to keep the original replacement or better in

this car; I am just a stickler for that kind of stuff. But I need a

battery and if someone from DELCO doesn't get back with me ASAP if not

sooner I may be forced into trying something else.

Thanks,

W.C. "Bill" Barkdull

Check with your local Corvette shops. A lot of them keep a gel battery in stock or know where to get one.:beer:w

Thanks but what I have gathered DELCO does not make a GEL Battery, and I want to stay as original as I can.

But again thanks for the comment,

Just wanted to let you know that I called 1-800 ACDELCO today and the battery you are referencing below is discontinued;...

Good old GM. Did they know they still have a page for the AGM battery on their web site? Sorry for the confusion. I just bought mine last year.
Buy one of those (anti-acid) battery protector pads just to be on the safe side.

It is a real mess if acid drips down below the battery tray on a C5.

bluecoupe,

After I finally got of customer service @ACDELCO, he told me that there was not enough sales for it, but as I said before one of the AC DELCO dealers here told me they had some issues with them, but who knows. At any rate I will put one maybe two of those protector pads below the battery. ;help Hey let me ask you another thing; does you C-5 have the insulator foam around it? Mine don't and others I have talked to say theirs does.
What is your thoughts on this as well;:confused I was going to order this, since I am a stickler for OEM as much as I can and feel good about it. Some of told me when dealers replace the battery they very rarely put this back; I have to assume something like this happened to mine, so my battery may have been replaced once at least; but since DELCO does not date their batteries it is hard for me to tell. And I am taking a trip this summer and didn't want to chance it. It always starts but I don't want to get stranded away from home. If I just stayed around home not sure I would even be concerned about it; at least as long as it is starting.

Thanks again,
Billl :w

Oh I forgot, very interesting links below that you attached, I checked this out already and everything looks decent, but I haven't looked directly at the ECM or wiring or anything like that, maybe I should.

Since you don't want to change to a non-Delco battery then just get your battery ("load") tested by your dealer and if it is ok put the protection pads under it. I do not have a foam battery cover. I looked at an 04 and it didn't have it either. I'll check it out with my local parts guy.

Don't worry so much about your road trip. It's a Chevy. Parts are everywhere.
If it ain't broke...

did my battery change today.

Rain,
When you get a chance. Can you please measure the (inner) dimensions of the battery insulator? I'm wondering if it will fit over the AGM battery that I have. The AGM Delco is gray not black so I figured I'd put the insulator and a black battery top cover.
Thanks,
Frank (bluecoupe)

not a problem. On the road now and this might be the last day in a few that I have web access.
Will try to get out there and measure it before noon.

To Hoosier Daddy,
Can you see where the acid leakage was coming from? I've driven off-road (with trucks) under the most severe conditions you could imagine. Including getting a Suburban airborne and have NEVER had a Delco battery leak. BUT we have a '99 C5 and I have been concerned about the reports of battery acid leakage but they all seemed second hand with no documentation as to why/how the battery leaked.

i noticed your post...........

i understand the leakage comes from cracks around the terminals. and the cracks are the result of over tightening, or, a design that results in cracks with very little wrench force (i.e. not a real sturdy design).

jz7p6t,

No :confused I could not figure out where it was leaking/seeping at but really I just had signs of acid on the battery tray; not bad. I cleaned the tray up with baking soda and water to neutralize the acid, bought one of those acid neutralizing mats from Mid-America Motor Works and installed a new battery (DELCO) I am a stickler for keeping the OEM as much as I can. Delco had one of those GEL batteries; which I was originally interested in but they disconinued it becasue they had a lot of problems with them; so I bought the 6 year DELCO, the best one they had for the Vette.

The DELCO dealer told me the only ones he found leaking were generally at the battery side post area and that was from some tightening them down to tight; so who knows ;shrug

This is exactly what I have been told too, but if mine had cracks in that area I couldn't see them, but being I didn't know how old it was and suspected it was more than likely the original in 2000 it made sense to change it.
