I purchased a 71 454 LS5 4 spd, Top Flight car that I would like to modify mildly. Does anyone know anything about an early Offenhouser alum. intake for a BB? Iwant to put an alum. intake on the engine but do not want to change the hood. Will this fit? I'm told a LS6 will fit but hard to find.
I want to change the intake, heads and headers this winter, any ideas? Thanks, the fryguy!

Hey Fryguy,

I doubt if you will find an answer to this one. Offy intakes are not too common anymore and I'd be surprised if you found anyone that had one on their car that knows the answer. Looks like you will have to do some measuring. Use a straight edge or even a yard stick and lay it on top of the carb flange with the intake sitting on a table or other flat surface. Then measure how high up it is from the table. Now the hard part will be getting the same measurement from the intake now on the car. After you determine how much taller the Offy inake is put a ball of clay or Plah Doh on the air cleaner and close the hood. The clay will squish down to the amount of clearance between the air cleaner and the hood. If there is more clearance as measured with the clay than additional height with the Offy intake then it is a go. If less then it won't fit with the stock hood.

Another consideration is the intake port shape. If the Offy has rectangular ports it won't work on the LS4 as it has oval ports. It will bolt up but the port mismatch will be severe. Same for the LS6 intake as they were rectangular too.

Thanks Tom

What a straight forward simple way to measure carb/ intake clearance! I think I will look for a L36 intake, I'm told they fit under the hood and their aluminun. I can always use your method of mearsuring! Thanks, Fred

The '67 L36 (427/390hp) is iron with a Holley flange, casting number 3866948. The '68 and '69 L36 is aluminum with a Rochester Q-Jet (spread bore ) flange. Casting numbers are 3919849 for '68 and 3947801 for '69.

top flight car

Please do not take offense however, Why in the world would you take a top flight car and do anything to it ? I have a 75 that I am trying to put back together and I lament all the time about all the changes and missing parts. Top flight is too hard to achieve . I cannot imagine taking one someone has poured thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours into and reducing it to a car like mine with non original parts and the like. If you asking I say please please don't do it. There are far to many non original cars out there to play with and have fun with. Hey I will trade you and you can modify my 75 to your hearts content. just my opinion. dont take it personally.....:beer

I have a #8005 Weiand "Action Plus" aluminum intake that might work for you.

It is a divided plenum, oval port, Holley flange manifold that measures 8.5" from the top of the Holley carb (bottom of the choke horn) to the top of the distributor mount pad. It's almost like new. I ran it about 6 months on my LS-5. It worked very well with my mild hydraulic cam and headers (4 speed).

Our new engine has square port heads and I will sell the Weiand for $85.00 plus shipping. I even have the original box!

If you are interested you can email me at dbacher@tropiczoneracing.com or post questions here.

i too have a 1970 big block, clearance is tight to say the least.
i have a torker 2 on top of my 454. iwas thinking of going to a performer rpm, to get more power lower in the rpm, but then thought about it, new hood($$), new manifold ($$) new camshaft($$) and even with the torker i can still fry the tires, take off in 3rd gear... so maybe its better to not have too much power low in the powerband, unless you have nice, wide sticky tires, but then if the tires hook up, something else is going to get strained (break)
just some thoughts...... mike
