Be Careful W/radiator

Hey guys, just to let you know. I took ol faithful to get the radiator flushed and new thermostat. It is 90+ degrees out here and just as high humidity. Anyway, I in my pea brain, told them to put a new thermostat, and I recommended a 160. They brought the wrong one and put in a 180. Anyway, I was late to workthe original is 195 so I said, 15 degrees will help, put it on. THE CAR RAN HOT, VERY VERY QUICKLY it shot to 285 as I drove off. So I pulled back in, they took the thermostat off, and then the mech said, the stock thermostat of 195 is the only that will allow it to run cool.
Ten minutes later I am back on the road, still running about 200 on the freeway, about 230 to 235 in traffic. All is well. Just thought I'd share this. This is an awsome sight.

I think I might be missing something here... What's an awesome site, the car running at 235?? If so, that's what alarmed me into doing my whole flush/fill/Tstat... 285 though... OUCH, I'd be AMAZED if there wasn't any damage done, that is one dangerous temp to even come CLOSE to..... As for a 195 allowing it to run cooler then a 180, I think that guy should set down the crack pipe, and step away, cause the anti-freeze fumes are getting to him.....

I will bet you a hundred dollars the 180 was put in upside down or was defective and never opened at all.

I would ask them for that 'stat to have it checked to see if it opens at 180 in a pan of water heated to 180.

I would also check your oil for water and do a compression check to see if you have blown a head gasket.

If they put the 'stat in wrong or defective then it's on them to rebuild your engine.

But I have to ask, why oh why when you hit 285 and the warning bar was red why didn't you stop??

sheez! man i hope you run good syntec oil!

my thoughts exactly it probably didn't open up or they put it in upside down. running a cooler t-stat shouldn't make it over heat! only difference really is it'll open earlier and run a bit cooler. winter time you won't get as hot heat as a 190 t-stat but thats still livable with good heat.

Sounds to me like you had an air pocket in your cooling system and the shop didn't follow the correct procedure in re-filling the cooling system. I'm surprised that they made a mistake like this, which is common among amateurs. Your coolant temperature will go way up unless you "burp" the system. The overheating has almost nothing to do with the thermostat unless the thermostat was defective.

The car was only driven about 1/2 mile and then I returned back to the shop. The oil looks good. But, I will take it to get checked by Chevy and see if any internal damage was done. A lesson learned the hard way. Hopefully, all is well, but the time to run around and do this stuff is a bit much.

Probably an air pocket in the cooling system.. my 95 LT1 Z28 did the same thing caused from an air pocket... Car never actually got hot.... motor was cool to the touch..
