A few weeks ago I put up a question on oil and it was a hot topic. Since then I have been running a a 10-40 threw the summer. The engine was just rebulit so I had been running regulat oil. As the weather is getting cooler and I have it broken in now, I switched to a ligher weight. I went down to a 10-30 durablend, and the diffrence is tremundous.

It drives so much better, imideatly after the oil change it perked right up. I runns cooler and takes off much much better. I cant beleive on weight lower oil would make that much of a diffrence.
It feel to me like a night and day diffrence at take off and lower rpm.

My question is should I stick with this oil?? Is it perking up so much because this oil is too light or was it just choking on what I was running before??

cmegga,

In Maine, I ran 10w-30 in all my vehicles, and have one currently at 157,000 miles and doesn't burn a drop. GM, in fact recomends 5w-30 for many of the new production engines year round. In NY I would think that weight would be fine all summer. I still am running 10w-30 even here in Kentucky, but I may yet reconsider that for a summer oil based on the input here.

I'm also in NY and run 10-30 in the summer & 5-30 in the winter.

I run 5w-30 synthetic all year round.

mvftw what town are you located? Im in Shirley

Boy, I feel for you guys on the rusty coast that have to run the multi-grade oils because of the WEATHER. We on the left coast run multi-grade by choice because we think it is best for the engine. Even with the severe weather changes of 20 and 30 degrees....HA Just couldn't pass up a chance to brag about our weather (85 all week), here in Northern Calif.

I use Red Line 5w-30 because it is thin and free's up a little horses.
Now, here is a good question. I understand thinner oil will flow better upon start up in the winter. But after start up, the engine will run at operating temperature say 200 degrees. Now how does the engine know at operating temp how hot or cold it is outside? So once the engine heats up the thickness of oil doesnt matter. Now if 5w-30, which is thin, is in the engine on a hot summer day say 95 degrees, Why would 5w-30 be too thin? All thicker oil does is slow the oil pump down which takes a few horses out to pasture.

mmvette80,
I'm in Massapequa, I also use synthetic oil.

so it sound like I will be pretty safe with the 10-30 as so many of you guys are running it. I just didnt want to run the risk of doing any damage, I alreadt went threw that once this spring.

Thanks for all the feedback !!!!

Now hold on there cruzer82. It's been 85+ here for the last year:L :L :L :L

Ya......I forgot about how nice Florida is except for the wind at times. Thought I would be nice and not say the "H" word so don't say the "E" word about the left coast. I guess we both have to give alittle to have this weather.
