My dad has a couple of old 283 engines in his garage that were given to him way back in the day by a guy claiming they were Corvette engines. Only thing is, I'm having trouble identifiing them in the Black Book and was wondering if anyone might know what we have here.

1) Block stamp = T T 0 8 D
Casting # 3737739
Date Cast A78

On the block stamp the 2nd "T" may not be a "T" because it appears 1/2 the size of the other numerals, but appears as a "T". (Although it could be an "I" with the bottom of the number worn off or filled with paint, since the deck is painted).

I found the reference to the casting # in the Black Book for the year of '58, but I understand that the castings could have gone to any model of chevrolet.

2) Block stamp = F 5 2 3 G C
Casting # 3731548
Date Cast D307

Not able to find suffix "GC" in the Black Book. Is this maybe a "General" application?

Also, I was able to identify a seperate set of 265 heads. Cast # 3725306 - D206.

Thanks for any help

John

The first one is a full size passenger car 283/2bbl powerglide. It's a Tonowanda "T" block also. Corvettes were Flint "F"

The second one is a '57 283 Flint block. GC is listed in my 1964 Chevy parts manual as a full size Chevy passenger car with 4 bbl carb and Turboglide transmission.

The 3725306 heads were used on '56 Corvettes on all 210 hp engines and early 225 hp engines with 2 bolt exhaust manifolds. They were likely used on passenger cars too.

Note that the crankshaft on that particular engine is specific to the Turboglide usage, has a HUGE hole drilled in the flange for the Turboglide converter pilot, and will NOT accept a pilot bushing for a manual transmission; the crank would have to be replaced in order to use it with a manual.

Thank you for the info. I had a feeling they weren't Vette blocks since I wasn't able to match the ID numbers. But I thought I would turn to the pro's at CAC to make sure.

This site is the best.

Thanks again!
