Just for kicks the other day I decided to clean up the old motor I pulled from my 86. I found 3 interesting things. First off there is no VIN #. Am I correct, the vin should be located on a little ledge right above the water pump inlet on the passenger side, or sometimes located on a ledge by the oil filter?? Well there are no #'s at all. Does not even look like they ever was numbers. I was told it was the original block, not that I really mind since i paid peanuts for it. Also I took the oil pan off, and it's a 2 bolt main. I thought all vette engines were 4 bolts. The last thing I noticed, it has a mount for the mechanical fuel pump with a plate over the hole. Is that on all of them? Cause I know they changed the blocks in 86. My guess is that they all have the fuel pump mount, but I'm just checking.

thanx,

All engines are stamped with an engine ID code, consisting of assembly plant code, production date and suffix code. V8 codes are stamped on a pad just forward of the right side (passenger) cylinder head. 6 cylinder engines are stamped on the passenger side of the block behind the distributor.
The engine date must precede the car build date, otherwise something is amiss. Some engine machining operations (decking) will obliterate the engine ID.

Your guess is correct. The mounting location for the mechanical fuel pump is incorporated into all of the small blocks. With fuel injection, the fuel pump moved to the tank so the mechanical location is plated off.

Be aware that the top bolt hole on the front of the block in front of the mechanical fuel pump location is open to the oil galley, and should already have a bolt inserted there to prevent oil leaks I found out the hard way when mine fell out and I was spurting oil like a cut artery. :eek

hmm

Well the only markings on my block are.. on the back right above the bell housing bolt holes, it's stamped

"8 GM 5.7 LG SGI D181 14093638" it has that marked right across the back

Ahhh poopy

umm

hahah you lost me, does that mean it is the original block? If thats what thoes #'s mean, I wonder why they were on the back.

Well it seems my motor was made April 18 1991. So maybe it was never from a corvette, but a GM replacment motor, that would explain why there are no VIN numbers.

My block date code is "D181" D=april 18= april 18th and 1= 1991 I assume
since "14093638" = 1986-1994 the only year with in thoes dates that ended in "1" would be 1991

you been a big help ken

I found more numbers today that were hidden under the block. "v0491064" the "064" is said to be an engine suffix code. Anyone know what this means?
