Hey All,

With dropping in a new 427 500HP block, I'm seriously going to need a scatter shield so I never amputate myself! I've done some reading from various guys on the web and they don't have a lot of good things to say about the Lakewood shield because of design issues hooking up to a 4-speed Muncie (which I have). Have any of you installed other brands and where could I get a good deal for one?

Thanks

Are the risks of the flywheel/clutch (I don't even know which flies out) flinging out of a 'normal' bellhousing that high?

If the engine is punched too hard, the potential is there. I'm big on safety, especially when it involves myself, so I would feel more comfortable with some protection.

Its usually the clutch disk, I have a lakewood in my 76 and it went in without a hitch indicated in OK I have the block protector also. I have used lakewoods on two other cars and not had problems. Just be sure to use the clutch fork from a Corvette and get the adjustable pivot.

Okay... you hit on a key point. The article I read was talking about Lakewood putting a bolt right where the clutch pushrod needs to be. He also stated that the hole in the block plate where the crank flange goes is a few thousandths too small for the flange to fit through. Did you not experience this bossvette?

Answers - No and no.
I've had a Lakewood for 34 years without trouble.

Without trying to be smart I wasn't aware that there are other brands of scatterschields. Lakewoods instructions will have all the info needed to do the install and if I remember correctly 67HEAVEN has pictures somewhere, check out his web site.

Well, simply from my lack of knowledge, I wasn't aware that Lakewood was the only mfg. of scatter shields so that solves that issue (whether it has install issues or not, I'm stuck with them).

With that aside, anyone know of a good buy... lowest I've seen is about $259. Summit is $290.

Before you button it all up, be sure and do a concentricity check with a dial indicator to make sure the tranny hole is on the same centerline as the crank; I've used many Lakewoods over the years, and all of them needed some work with offset dowels to get them in spec. Also, use the GM clutch fork (not the Lakewood fork), an adjustable pivot ball, and READ THE INSTRUCTIONS.
