Bose CDM wiring harness pin replacement.
I recently had to remove the Bose CDM unit in my 94 Coupe. Why?
Because there was about 2 gallons of water in the storage bin behind
the passenger seat. This is where the jack and the Bose CDM unit is kept.
The install of hatch drain tubes was not done correctly and water
drained into the storage bin instead of into the wheel well.
The CDM does not operate for long underwater. The CDM unit was "toast"
and needed replacement.
While removing the main black and grey plugs, one of the wires
broke at the neck of its pin. I looked at the other pins and found that due
to the heat generated by the electrolytic action from the water and 12vdc
the pins had corroded. A new harness was expensive and very time consuming
to replace. I had funds for the CDM but not for a wiring harness.
So, I repinned the black and grey connectors instead.
The pins are called "GM ECM" pins. I got these at PEP Boys. They are about
$3-5 for a pack of 5 pins. The Motormite brand p/n is 85324.
The blister pack is Stock card#20-18.
You need a pair of wire cutters, large paperclip and a pair of needlenose
pliers. The paperclip is used to push the pin locking tab down
to extract the pin from the plastic plug. It took about 2 hours to extract the
old pins and redo the wires with the new pins. You have to be willing to sit in
uncomfortable positions to accomplish this task. At 6'1" and 58 yrs old it was
uncomfortable lying, squatting, in the hatchback area.
