1996, Gold Bose sound system. At low volume the rear speakers have an annoying bass crackle like a blown speaker, when you turn up the volume, it goes away. A couple years ago i took off the screen covers, and could find no rips in the cone. Has been that way for quite some time, and I have had the head deck unit refurbished.

Is it the amp, or the speaker, replace both on both sides??;shrug

Not EVEN close to that simple with a Bose...

Mine does something like that and I know for a fact that its the tuner and not the speakers. The vol, bal, fader treble levers get dirty and short out. As the range is moved out of the problem area the noises seem to vanish.

Last est I got for a swap was $400...Picked up some speakers for $10 out of a low miles part car...:happyanim:

My 90 vette has Bose Gold with the cassette, CDROM and radio combo. The crackle and rpm whine would build up in a feedback loop within 5-10 minutes to the point where I couldn't take it. This started happening back in 2005 and I just stopped using it altogether. Figured it was cheaper to just use my iPod. Well A month or so ago I decided to fix it. Not being sure which sub system or amp or speaker was bad, I decided that since the radio did work for a while it was probably the amps since they are natorious for going bad. Also, when one starts going, the others follow soon after. They need to be replaced in left/right pairs. Long story made shorter, I purchased used front and back amps. Bought mine at EBay from a guy selling his from a 94 Canadian vette, he was replacing his Bose with an aftermarket system. These can also be bought new at Vette aftermarket online stores. Got the amps and replaced my older ones, and now the system rocks. Note that the amp cable connector was different between my 90 and his 94, so make sure you get the cable too. The remaining problem is the CDROM no longer works and spits out the cd regardless the age or format. There are guys that replace the CDROM, as these go out often too; but I first have to remove the radio unit without messing up the dash.

Good link Ted, thanx, I saved it for future reference.

The crackle does come and go, even at the low volumes, sometimes it is non-existant, but other times ggrrrrrrrr.:mad

So boom, have u gotten rid of the crackle?? I dont mind changing the rear amps & speakers if it is the issue, but would PMO if it don't ;)

Unfortunately no...

I'm going to have to replace the tuner. I want to stay all factory with the original Bose and speakers, although there are many aftermarket systems that would do well and do it for less money. Its the "original" thing that I'm interested in.

I have seen a couple Bose rebuilds that did'nt impress me that much. They seemed like they were less than fresh, not as loud and even a little rough or static as the vol was turned.
