The rear brake caliper bracket on my car is broken. Can I take it apart enough to change the bracket and the backing plate? Or do I have to spend major money for someone else to rebuild it and the wheel bearings?

I think you will need to replace the entire spindle mount.

You can find them used. At that point, you should consider rebuilding the rear wheel bearing.

I did my own, but it can be a difficult job better left to a pro.

I've spent the last 6 months dealing with a total suspension rebuild on my 75. when I got to the trailing arms I started to do the rebuild and found that to get the parts apart, special tools , tolerences, and an expertise that I don't posses( or the time to learn right now) were invoved. Luckily I found a local mechanic that took them apart and rebuilt them for 100 a side. I supplied the parts. Another shop wanted 300 a side to dismantle and reassemble, parts not included. The part thats broken here, requires the spindle to be removed, which will require a press. Good luck, Jim
