Know that brakes are a weekly discussion here on the CAC. But looking for updated info and advice.

Front brakes on my 96(53kmiles) have been squeeling more often with recent drives.
Want to inspect them and replace if needed.

Have read up in the Haynes manual on how to inspect them. Anyone else have more to add to this task, in addition to what most of us have read in the manuals?

Also, What about slotted rotors? If mine are worn, or cant be turned/machined anymore.
Worth replacing with the newer style rotors? OR are they a waste of coin?

What about pads?
Read a post that someone had gotten some nice pads at AutoZone(i think) and that they had a free replacement set when those wore out.

Thanks for any and all info!

Front pads

Hi Rain

l just picked up my vette from my chevey dealer, because the front end of my car sounded like it was coming apart. It was mostly rattling like loose change.

The problem was that when the last guy changed his pads, he put on pads without retaining clips (non-Delco). The pads cost $211 and $100 labor, that included tightening up my passenger side mirror. It was loose.

The car is now silent, like it sould have been.

lt pays sometimes to go to the dealer if he has a mechanic that is familiar with vettes.

In my opinion, l would only use original parts unless there was absolute proof of a better way.

l also have cross drilled rotors and when it's time to replace them, l'm going back to the originals.

Hi Rain
I recently developed a squeal from my front breaks while backing out of the garage. Turned out to be one of those little spring clips rubbing on the rotor because the pad was worn out. I replaced them with a set of AutoZone Carbon-Metalic pads. They even came with the spring clips. Easiest car I’ve ever changed pads on. Didn’t have to do anything with the rotors just tossed the new pads on and went for a ride. I’ve got about 300 miles on the new pads and so far I like them, stops a lot better than it did with it’s old worn out pads.
