Brakes fade in stop and go traffic

After about an hour of stop and go traffic driving my brake pedal starts to fade. The pedal goes almost to the fire wall. If you pump the pedal then I get full brakes. If I stop and wait for a few minutes the pedal comes back. I can't find any leaks and the fluid level is good. The only time I have seen this problem in a car is when I had a brake shoe stuck and was boiling the brake fluid. This problem comes and goes. Any help????

Might be that the booster is starting to fail (not holding vacuum). I'd look there.

Master cylinder is bypassing! You're gonna have to fix that!

Check the master cylinder and the booster. Booster failure usually has a hiss to it.

They're one right after another so it's not too difficult. If you have to change the booster, put aside an afternoon because the inside nuts are a real drag to get to!

The master cylinder is very straight forward in removing and installing.

After you do them, take the opportunity and use new brake fluid, it never hurts.

Each item runs in the $150 area, they're pretty common at auto parts stores.

Looks like a master cyl when you take it off check inside the booster and see if the brake fluid has goten into the booster if not just master needs to be replaced,boost should be ok.There is a spring to increase master presure mid america has it,if needed.:eyerole

Just got finished with this ordeal. Ecklers lost the order 2 times and stopped answering my email ad so we ended up wasting 2 weeks waiting for a new booster. We then ordered another one from Corvette America. They gave me great service and competitive prices and the booster arrived here in Spain in 3 days.

The first thing- and cheapest is to completely change the fluid. Brake fluid will absorb water over time. if you get the fluid hot enought to boil the water the brake pedal will be spongy or non-existant.
