I'm considering to upgrade my dist with a Petronix kit, but I would need to have some more input first.
Can anyone tell me the difference between the Ignitor, and Ignitor II kits? I have read the info on the Pertronix web site, but will there really be a difference for me, worth going for the more expensive Ignitor II?

I've also understood that the Ignitor kit can come with or without "Lobe sensor". What is the exact function of this?
According to some sources, the version without lobe sensor has to have the distributor removed during installation, is this so, and why?

The Ignitor with the lobe sensor will slip right in and sense the existing lobes that currently open the points. Without the Lobesensor requires that you put a "ring" around these lobes and the pickup triggers off this ring.

I have a Pertronix that has been on the car for about a year now and my only issue is that I need to turn the key ON for about 10 seconds before I engage the starter - or it farts, backfires and just won;t start. I USUALLY remember to wait, but I still forget when I am in a hurry! Get one without the delay (I believe that would be the Ignitor II - but n ot sure).

Basically, I really like the unit - that said, I have a baggie in the back which contains a set of points and a condenser............

The Petronix 2 has variable dwell, where the original does not. What this means is you will be able to get a little more output out of your ignition coil at higher RPM. If your motor is modified, you'll see some benefit.

pws69-It sounds like yours is not working right. I'd give them a call.

The first-generation Lobe-Sensor ("LSC" model) requires a 3-5 second delay between "key on" and "start" before it will work (it's in the instructions, which nobody ever reads). The original "Ignitor" and the new "Ignitor II" don't require the delay.

It IS working "right".

As John Z stated, it is a first gen Lobe Sensor and it requires the delay by design.

You did not mention that you had the original version.
I thought you had the later unit. Sorry!

You cannot leave your igniton in the "ON" position for extended periods or you will Fry the Standard Ignitor, You can use the "accesories" position all day long though.... Whereas the Ignitor II has circuitry that had done away with that problem.

I went with the breakerless unit purchased through Lectric Limited. Costs a bit more but only has one wire to hook up. Looks completely stock but much more responsive than the points.

I've been using the Pertronics Ignitor 1 for 6 years now trouble free. But I do like the looks of, and the good things said about the new Crane XR-i unit.
