Build Sheet dilemma????????

Hey guys,

I have posted this previously, but only got a few replies.
I thought I may do a poll.
I have an 81 Coupe built at St Louis. The build sheet is still intact and is still legible as I can see the delivery dealer as Fairway Chevrolet in Las Vegas Nevada in the bottom left corner.

Question is, do I remove the tank, photocopy the sheet and put the original back in or do I not put it back in all together and frame it as it is the only one in existence. ;help
The reason I want to view it is that naturally it has all the info I need to slowly restore her to her former glory!

What do you think?

Now if I was inquiring about a new C5 or putting a deposit on a C6, then they would still be bending over!!!!

If I had an NCRS quality Vette, I would put it back on the tank, but protected under plastic or something.

The '78 Vette I have now will never be judged by NCRS because too few pieces are original. It was stolen when it was 3 months old and stripped where it sat in a warehouse until the summer of '82. A friend of mine bought it at a police auction, and had all of the missing pieces replaced with '82 parts. I have owned it ever since. I have taken the build sheet off and have it stored where it cannot deteriorate any more.

I'd take it off, preserve it, xerox or photograph it, and put the copy on the tank. It will continue to deteoriorate if left on the tank. Chuck

I would remove the original, copy it and put it in plastic or some other type of way to preserve it. If left on top of the fuel tank it will be gone soon.

Replacing the original Build Sheet back to the top of the tank. I don't think if NCRS judging or Bloomington Gold would be far enough under and up into the car to see it or feel if something paper is there.

I still want to find mind and maybe will look deeper this winter.

I was in two minds on what I was going to do here.
One part tells me to put it back, but I know it will turn to sh*t in a few years if I do. The other tells me to take it off and preserve it with the only other document I have, which is the Warranty Booklet. This also has Fairway Chevrolet on it. (Hey I wonder if I could still make a claim???)

Vettedoc, yeah that sounds like a good idea, trouble is that because it was built at St Louis and not Bowling Green, there are no records for the Museum to go from. GM in their wisdom decided to purge the docs along with other stuff.
You'll probably find that most Vettes pre 81 cannot reorder these docs unless they have originals to go from.

One thing is for sure, if I do not see what is on that sheet I will never know what was going through the 'owner at the times' mind and could never truely know what is standard on my car.
I would not do the car any justice by leaving it on there to perish, without looking at it and at least recording the info.

Chuck & Bill & D, I thought about what you guys are suggesting, that sounds like a good idea by putting a copy on instead. I might do some quick research into what plastic pockets would be good.

Greekman, if you don't know exactly where it may be, just look to the front of the fuel tank. It is up above the spare tyre holder and between the storage holders and the fuel tank. There is a gap there. You will be able to see it from just getting under the car (without ramps or a hoist) and sticking your head up under there, it is pretty visible. Shine a light up there as well. Mine came down over the tank and you can see the last 50mm (2 inches) of the sheet. It was like winning the Lotto!

I was talking to an old fella last night at a Corvette function we had at Dreamworld and he said that there is a special way to remove the sheet without damaging it. He said he cannot recall exactly, but he had the info at home.
Any suggestions here?

On my 96, I think the "special way" is to drop the gas tank - yeah right.

I found the one to my 80 it was OK but it started to fall to pieces.
I'm glad I got it off, and is now part of my folder for the 80.

i'm with D on that one, remove it, copy it, put a copy of it back. Now, when you described where it's at, you were sayig without a lift.. Really ? Would you have to remove the spare carrier (i guess, you do) ?? If you are still at that, could you take a pic location wise ? I havent even tried getting to mine, as i thought i would have to remove/drop the tank, but if it's just a matter of dropping the spare/carrier, i might attempt it.. What about removing it though ?

No, sorry Stefan.

I meant you could see it without putting it on a hoist or ramps.

To remove it, it will need to go on a hoist so that the fuel tank can be removed without too much drama.
