Burbling rear end

Any ideas on a proper diagnosis for this...

I have had, for some time now, several years and at least 20 k mi,
a "burble" sound which happens only when the gas pedal is
depressed. Also, it is not present in gears 1-4 and is most prominant in 6th at speeds over 45 or so. I noticed this morning
that if I give it a decent amount of gas in 6th rear starting at
42mph or so, I do not hear the "burble" until I start letting off
the gas to "cruise" at 50-and up mph.

I also noticed that the sound is present when I downshift into
5th, but disappears if I downshift to 4th from 5th. Then, if
I up shift from 4th to 5th, it is not audible in 5th anymore.

My mechanic has said that this is a differential problem and could
be anything but a guess is a worn bearing. The diff. was not
serviced until 42 k mi, as the first owner didn't do the service.
