Bypassing The Abs System

:eyerole Call me crazy but I finally did it. My 87 Coupe's ABS system was giving me lots of grief. After installing a new master cylinder, new calipers and rotors, new pads and front brake hoses, my right front caliper still stuck. It would release but the pads in that side would drag until I wore out the OEM pads in five months:eek :eek :eek After the system was checked by four different mechanics, they said the Modulator valve in the ABS was to blame. They even pressure flushed the system twice.:confused :r The right front caliper brake line was partially clogged by crud but after the flushing the problem persisted. So, the last mechanic suggested eliminating the ABS unit and installing a "distribution block", where the two lines from the master cylinder connect on one side and the three lines that go to the front and rear calipers connect to the other side. This, in effect, distributes line pressure to both front and rear calipers. Now the car stops evenly with no drag or pull to the sides.:upthumbs Of course, in a skid situation or when you perform a "panic stop" there is no ABS system to get me out of trouble, so I have to be extra careful when the emergency arrives. The main reason I did not replace the ABS unit is the cost of $1,913.00:eek :eek :eek and the 1-3 weeks waiting time to have the unit delivered to Puerto Rico. Anyway, 1985 and previous Corvettes stopped well without this system.:D :D :D I am planning on mounting the ABS unit on a wooden base and use it as an ornament or conversation piece in my living room. My son says it is crazy to disable the unit but what does he know about cars? Anyway, I don't let him drive the 'Vette.:duh :duh :duh

Do yourself a favor, check ebay, contact Jeff Kopp for a better price new, or try a salvage yard. I would not ditch the ABS system.

I agree with JeffVette......You really do need the ABS system.... :TALK

Soon you will be able to order new cars without ABS. The 2004 Grand Prix Performance Option for one. That's just the beginning.

RE: Bypassing the ABS System

I did not go to a salvage yard because there is not a single Corvette, no matter what year, in any salvage yard in Puerto Rico. I sincerely do not know where owners of wrecked Vettes send their cars. Corvette heaven maybe????? Only one wrecked Vette appeared in the classifieds in more than a year and it was an 84 if my memory is correct. The new part costs $1,913.00!!!!
