c-5 oils

I have an oil question,i have always used mobil 1,then i tried Royal Purple,when I tried to read the dipstick,I could not get a good reading afret many many trys!then I went back to Mobil-1 and got good readings,so does anyone think Royal purple sticks to engine parts better?not allowing the oil to run back down quicker?Anyone? /

Never tried Royal Purple, but when I change the oil (with M1) I have a hard time seeing the level at first on the dipstick, once I've run it a while it shows just fine.

There are as many different opinions on motor oil as there are corvettes. Some people think that since a bearded Scotsmen in a white jumpsuit yelling "Think with your dipstick, Jimmy!" that Castrol makes the best motor oil. Some from another crowd are convinced that 'Royal Purple' is the only thing that meets the highest merit to be inside their engine ? Me, I'm not an engineer, nor a chemist. I don't have a degree in automotive science or a background in automotive electrical or chemical construction.

All I know is that Mobil 1 Oil 5w/30 is the factory fill for every single corvette since 1997, up to and including the 639HP 'Blue devil' 2009 ZR1. My owners manual that 'A' motor oil, any motor oil needs to meet GM 4718M specs, be that Mobil 1 or whatever. I do know that Mobil motor oil is the factory fill for all Porsches built as well all Rolls Royces as well as a dozen more who use it exclusively as their factory fill. Now why would I think I have even one iota of education or experience that would compel me to use some motor oil other than what the folks at GM and the Bowling Green factory use in every Corvette made?

I change my oil and fill it till it is at the full mark on the dipstick. And since I've owned five Corvettes, I don't plan on rethinking what the GM engineers recommend. But, . . .

It's kinda like trying to mess with Mother Nature......it'll get you nowhere!:L

I've got over 67K Mobil One miles on my '98, and it's never burned or lost a drop of oil. I change it when the DIC tells me to, normally around 7,000 miles by the way I drive my car. Could be happier even if I was twins!!

I agree that Mobil 1 should be used in our vettes,but I have a news flash for Killian,I worked for GM for 30 years and we used Mobil products back in the early 70's.Why? Because they had a contract with them!VW uses castrol,etc. etc. oil is oil,not milk,another forum swears by AMsol who knows? just keep it clean and full

Actually, factory fill M1 started back in 1992 with the introduction of the LT1.

I tore my 1993 LT1 partially down after 80,000 miles and the inside of the engine looked brand new. We did a L98 car at the same time, that didn't use M1, and it looked like an old man's lung in there after smoking for 50 years.

That sold me on M1, been using it in everything I own ever since... all the way down to my lawnmower.

Are there better oils out there? sure, but what's the difference between getting a 98% or 99% on a test? they are both an A+. I have done a ton of research and my conclusion is M1 is the best grade A value you can get, with zero worries.

Yes you are right about the first factory fill! but again vette owners will debate two things-oils and waxes:L I never heard anyone say I used pennsoil and my engine blew-up!What makes one oil better than another?The manufactors claim?:confused

Generally: Not a whole lot happens in one oil change.

Synthetics have control over particle size and have better additive packages. That leads to better flow, better protection, and less heat.

If you took two identical engines and ran off brand X in one and a high quality Synthetic in another for say... 100k miles, that's when you would notice the big difference between the two engines.

That is the key to long engine life. I have seen dino based oiled vehicles do over 300k miles and still run like new with regular oil changes, and absolutely no sludge on the rockers or cam. Always use an oil that meets the manufacturer spec's, as they know the vehicle better than anyone else.

My introduction to synthetics was back in the early 90's when I saw a special on TV. An independant testing agency took a V6 OLDs and tore it down, used a micrometer to check all of the clearances...put it back together with synthetic oil, Mobil 1 I think, and ran it for 100K mile, with oil and filter changes at regular intervals. They tore it down and re-did all the, measurements...the results "no measurable change in any of the tolerances" the inside of the engine was like new. That sold me, I started using Mobil 1 or Gastrol Syn every 7,000 miles with filter change on all of my vehicals; except my vette which gets changed once a year - due to low miles.
