C-7 Oil Change

I have a 2015 C-7, non Z06, non Z51. Should the oil be changed at 500 miles? Will GM pay for that 500 mile oil change on a non Z06, non Z51 car? Thanls! Tom

That's really two questions, I think.

1) Should you change the oil at 500?

I don't think it's necessary, but you should change the oil filter. Run that oil until your regular drain interval, then change the oil and filter.

I'm with Hib --- change the filter and top off the oil level. The oil should be just find but the filter may have picked up some build trash and other stuff that could slow the flow through.

Will GM pay for? No clue. You'll have to ask your dealer and read your service contracts.

I think it is just the dry sump oil system that a 500 mile oil change is required, which is Z51 and Z06. There is a customer service phone number in the back of your owners manual that you can call to find out about the free oil changes, I know GM offers them on C7 but I am not sure if it a contract that you purchase at time of sale or if it is just part of ownership, and I believe it might be for two years. Have your VIN number ready if you do call. There is a GM bulletin that mandates Mobil 1 oil for the free oil changes, so if you do have the free oil changes let the dealership know that Mobil 1 is to be used. Good luck with it.

Ever the contrarian, I ALWAYS dump the initial fill/filter at, or before 1,000 miles, and my dealer did it under the GM maintenance program for my C7. I see no good coming out of changing the filter and leaving the oil behind. I have broken in 5 new Vettes in the last ten years, and have seen alloy of some kind in the bottom of the oil change pan on every first change. They were obviously too large pass through the filter, but also did not embed in the filter. I don't know if the trash can be carried from the pan to something important, but I know it can't damage anything from the used oil tank at the dealer or the used oil cans in my garage. A full change is under $30 (carry out price for the oil) at Wally World - cheap peace of mind.

Me too, any new vehicle I purchase no matter the manufacturers recommendations.

If your going to the bother of doing the oil filter for gods sakes do the oil at the same time since your under the vehicle anyway. Saving a little money and filtering dirty oil with a new filter just doesn't add up to me. JMO.

I hate throwing away perfectly good oil since synthetics hit the market. At the same time, I don't trust the little oil filters as long as I trust the oil.
Starting with my '92 Vette back in 1991, I started changing the oil filter at 3-4 thousand intervals and changing the oil on the third or fourth filter.
I refilled the oil pan with Mobil 1 each time also.

I put 103K miles on my '92 LT1 engine changing the oil and filter this way. Wanting to add more horsepower, I had the engine pulled on the '92 to upgrade it with LT4 components. When the engine was pulled apart, the insides looked new. The wear was almost zero. Fresh bearings and rings were installed and they were all "standard" size.

I treat all my cars that way now and I've never experiences any issues.

My 427 Vert with the dry sump system gets a new filter every 4-5 thousand miles and fresh oil with the third filter. It's got 28K miles on it now.
Okay, I changed the oil and filter after 1200 miles when it was new, not just the filter, to make sure it was good to go (I paid for the service) and to get know the dry sump system better.
After that, filters only, twice, then oil. Basically, it's received fresh oil three times since new and several filters.

On a new engine, if changing the oil and filter after a few hundred miles makes you feel better, go ahead. It's your money (and mine). After that, don't waste good oil.

No , I joined because I just got a C7 and am planning on changing my oil soon and wondered if there were any tricks I should know about . I saw the Wal Mart post and it shocked me people driving 50+k cars are so chincy and uncaring about the businesses being harmed by the Evil Empire . More questions ?

No re-evaluation needed. You know I am in the industry right? I not only know where the auto parts stores are, but know most of the managers, and yes the auto parts stores do appreciate me. I know where to buy my parts and supplies and where not to.

Acceptance should probably be your first step, no one needs an evangelist to tell them where or how to spend their money.

Yes it seems you are the perfect example of someone who needs help on issues like this ! The real kicker is that usually even without specials you can get oil cheaper at the parts stores ! It didnt start out about Shopping if you look back . Its sad people dont understand about this subject . Ill try to help ya briefly . Wal mart pays its employees as little and treats them as bad as they can get by with . The business plan includes putting all competing specialty stores out of business (gain Monopoly) reguardless of what they have to sell products for .(this has been done many times across America already and sometimes they then close the Wal Mart Store as well ! ) This means Grocery Stores , Electronics Stores , Auto Parts Stores etc etc , all of which pay and treat their employees better . (dont take my work just read a little ) Surely you are starting to get the point , unless you are like Trump who thinks making America great means producing his products in China ? :L
