C2-Block casting date vs. Stamped date

Can anyone explain the relationship of the block casting date and the date derived from the stamped engine Id code? I believe the casting date corresponds with the date that the component was cast. But what about the stamped date. Should they be the same or is there a lag between the two. If a lag be, what realistically should the date difference be? I assume the stamping follows the cast date. Thanks -- Bill

if i'm wrong there will be plenty of others to chime in and correct me but I believe it works like this;

casting date = date block was cast. This must precede the pad assembly stamping.
Stamped date = the date stamped on the pad is the actual assembly date the engine was assembled with all it's componets.

Both of these dates should precede the actual vehicle assembly date but not by more than 6 months and that's actually a big window of time.

Most original cars have dates much closer together such as withing the same week or at least the same month or going out to 2 or 3 months. Six months is a pretty long time for the factory to have an engine bock sitting around without getting assembled and installed in a car

It helps a great deal, thank you. How much time between the block casting date and the component assembly date?
 
nothing in my NNCRS judging book telling how much time gap should be between the two dates. Realistically I imagine it would be within a month or 2 but NCRS actually gives up to a 6 month difference in time frames as acceptable

The "typical" spread between casting date and engine assembly date is between two days and two weeks, but there were variations for many reasons; the "typical" spread between engine assembly date and car final assembly date is between five days to a month, again due to variations and primitive inventory management methods at St. Louis in those days. Recognizing the variations and odd things that occasionally happened, NCRS allows full credit for components dated up to six months prior to the car's final assembly date.
