Hey...For the past 3 months or so I have been trying to find out my original RPOs and other info on my car, but all the labels on the interior are gone, and Bowling Green only has records for 1981 and on. I was told an original build sheet can be found on top of the gas tank, but I hadnt been able to find it. Tonight while lying under my car checking out the differential Im going to replace I noticed an old piece of paper hanging down from the gas tank....I actually found the old build sheet. The problem now is, because of its age, it tore into 4 pieces. I can easily tape it, but it is also very dirty and has some mold growing. Does anybody have any tips on cleaning or restoring the build sheets? I know its possible and they do it with old documents all the time...any input?
I appreciate any help,
Thanks 80VetteL82

You can also get a copy from GM of the original dealer wholesale invoice which has more info on it than the tank sticker does, for about $50.00; call Chris Barzookis at Allied Vaughn at (800) 462-5543, ext. 105.

Thanks. Ill give him a call tomorrow. So it has all the information the Tank Sticker does like RPO#s?

do they have it also for a '78?

The build sheet is the holy grail of Corvette restoration. If you have the sheet I would take it to a document restorer. They have the knowledge and the expertise to preserve and protect that document.

I have not heard of getting a copy of the wholesale dealer document on older Corvettes as I suspect that applies only to 81 and newer models. The reason why the old documents are not available is because when GM moved the Corvette production from St Louis to Bowling Green in 81 and all of the old paperwork at St Louis was destroyed or lost in that big warehouse in the sky.

If you can picture the end of the old Indiana Jones movie where they move the Arc of the Covennant to the government warehouse never to be found again that is what I suspect happened to the GM paperwork.

If Im not mistaken the paper work was lost due to a fire in the warehouse where all the documents where stored. Thats the story the lady at GM gave me when I contacted her for documentation on my 73 Vette..

St. Louis didn't keep any paperwork - they reported production daily to Chevrolet-Central Office in Detroit, and they had the records. Chevrolet has all the dealer wholesale invoices available for '77-up Corvettes through the contractor I mentioned above. The only ones out of luck (unless the car still has the tank sticker) are '76 and earlier.

Thanks John, since my car is a 70 I knew I was out of luck. Good news for the owners of 77+ Corvettes though. Thanks for the information.

i used them about a year ago (of course it was just after they stopped doing the work for free and started charging the $50.00 fee., lol). they were very efficient and prompt and i got the documentation within 10 days or so. just be careful if you have the same habit i have of destroying mail i get that i don't recognize from the return address before i open it, lol!! it arrived with an non identifiable return address. it's a nice piece of information to have.
