C4/C5/C6 air induction on a C3

I was getting back to the idea of trying to figure out to do a C.A.I. on the car again without using the stock C3 intake that goes over the radiator shroud.
Does anyone know if a later gen setup will work? I don't recall what the C4 uses but I know there are plenty of aftermarket setups for the C5 & C6's that go in front of the radiator.

The end result is that I want the air intake in front, or forward, of the radiator.
 
Look for an old turbo inlet for early corvettes,or measure the diameter of the top of the carb and find in intake tube to fit. Some throttle bodies might have the same diameter, like the mid to late 80's 305 camaro's and then you can attach one of the k&n canister filters possibly. One of the universal ones you see at the auto parts store might bolt up to. SLP had an intake for the C4 which has three of those canister type filters and it adds alot of power.

If I'm understanding what you are saying/thinking, I don't have a problem getting connected to the carb. The issue I have is that I need something short & wide to fit in between the hood and the top of the radiator shroud.

The bottom duct (153009) is kinda what I'm looking for, but not that. Right now I'm too proud/stubborn to put it back on the car after selling the setup years ago. :L I'd rather get something a bit more custom. (HERE is the original thread that got me started on this. (It's one of many...))

This is the one from slp i was refering to. It does work and might not be to bad to modify to fit but I dont know the measurments.
 
I am not sure even if you could get this type of intake in front of your radiator that you could open the hood. I am in the process of building one for my LS conversion. My idea is to go through the side of the radiator support and put the filter on after going through the support. I ordered my parts from silicone intakes dot com.
 
Please post some pics when you get done. Have a vested interest if I ever get around to putting the '65 Rochester FI back on.
 
On the C4, the stock air intake, which looks alot like what your looking for are really restrictive. Have you considered usina a K&N canister type filter off an elbow coming off the carb? May take it to the side of the engine bay ? If you use chrome or stainless tubing it would look cool.

Won't really benefit me much. All that would do is put the air filter / intake over the headers.
Also, I agree that stainless or chrome look cool, but they conduct & hold heat more than plastic or rubber tubing. Rubber would be the best tubing I think. Plastic can get hard and brittle after constant exposure to high temp heating cycles.

Right now, I'm consider just cutting the space in my hi-rise hood where a cowl induction cut would be if it was a true induction hood. It probably wouldn't be as effective as pulling air in forward of the radiator, but it's still better than what I have.

I'm kicking around each option right now, weighing the pros & cons. It can only be one or the other. If I get a CAI setup, then there's no point in cutting the hood. Unless I did a really custom custom setup where I had a cannister on top of the carb with a CAI to the front and little window cut in the back of it to grab air from the hood opening. ;shrug So many options...any probably none of them will make a significant improvement :L

I put an air filter assy from an 85 under the radiator and cut out the lid and made a scoop. It is about 2"x12" and comes out right in the middle of the air dam. I just cut out a notch for it. Works great. Not only does it bring in cold air, the faster I go, the more air is forced in.

Here This is a shot from under the car. Please disregard the dirt, I have a 1/4 mile gravel and dirt driveway. I almost have to waash the car as I leave to keep it clean till I get back home.
 
Nice setup, Art, but I can't do that since I'm still running a fan off the water pump.

The base of the windshield is a high air pressure point. If you build a sealed enclosure from the cowl intake to the carb you'll be doing pretty good.

PS. The mechanical fan waists almost as much power as you're going to gain with a cool air intake.

I think JohnZ and maybe Vettehead Mikey mentioned that the actual parasitic loss from the fan is less than a couple HP. Basically, it was almost negligable. BUT, that might be the same as what I gain from a different air intake setup ;shrug :L

I don't know the compatibility of those years hoods to the 1980 body. But it wouldn't matter because 1) they wouldn't clear my current air cleaner assm and 2) I already have an aftermarket raised-cowl hood. But where the original design intent of the hood was to have the open area, these hoods are manufactured to seal the entire compartment.
