I installed Firestone run flats several months ago. The tires are great Recently however during routine maintenance checks at the Chev. dealer they did a recalibrate on the computor ( I don't know why). Now thw sensors don't work and a signal comes up evey time you turn on the engine saying sensor problems. Actually one sensor does work. The dealer says they have a service bullitin saying not to use the Firesones because they have too much metal. Has anyone had this problem and know a solution?

There is a GM service bulletin concerning the use of aftermarket tires and the tire pressure sensors. Since different brands have varying amounts of steel in them, this can interfere with the signal from the sensors. Not sure if this is your particular problem or not.

HI there,
Yes, there is a technical service bulletin issued for tires creating interference with sensor operations, however, it was for one brand only.
There is a Goodyear tire, called the F1=Steel, which uses a steel sidewall belt, as well, as the steel in the actual tread area.
Now, it is the steel in the sidewall that create the interference, where as the radio signal is interrupted. So, with that, as long as you do NOT have steel belting in the sidewall, your sensors should work correctly with any given tire.
Just check the side of the tire, to confirm construction of the tire, and I am sure you will do just fine.

pressure monitors

I thought that there was some way to "educate" the monitors when they were not calibrated. There is a procedure for doing this, one wheel at a time. C4C5 specialist, does this apply?

I thought pretty much ALL tires have steel in the sidewall nowadays. Not true?

Hi there,
Yes, drthvttr, there is a relearn procedure through the DIC, that can be performed, as you thought.
Now, you will need a strong magnet to do this.
DM, as for the steel in the sidewall, not all are like this, due to the fact that steel in the sidewall, will roughen the ride. The up side, is that it aids in deflection of the tire under braking.
So, tire construction is so complex, that I can only say that this is a known issue for this tire only, with the steel sidewall.

Here's the scoop... the main item you need to re-calibrate(actually it's "program the sensors" in the service manual lingo) the sensors is a magnet to engage sensors during the training sequence. The GM tool is J41760, but maybe a decent powered magnet with a horseshoe shape or hole in it would suffice??? I got a pair from Lowe's lumber for $4 and form a "V" with them and it works fine.

Make sure vehicle has been stationary for at least 2 minutes.
1 - Ignition on
2 - Press RESET to clear all IPC messages from DIC
3 - Press and release OPTIONS, scroll til IPC is blank
4 - Press and hold DIC RESET for 3 seconds
5 - Press OPTIONS again until TIRE TRAINING message is displayed
6 - Press RESET until IPC LEARN L FRONT TIRE to begin programming
7 - Install J 41760 over left front valve stem (I guess you could try a hefty magnet now).
8 - The horn will sound indicating LF sensor is programmed
Notice - if after 15 seconds the horn doesn't sound, remove and reinstall tool on stem. This may have to be done up to three times in some instances.
9 - IPC will direct you to LEARN R FRONT TIRE, R REAR TIRE, then L REAR TIRE, then LEFT FRONT.

Programming Cancellation:
1. Programming mode will cancel if any of the following conditions are met:
- program mode exited through DIC
- ignition turned off
- all four sensors programmed
- TPM program mode for 2 minutes with no sensors learned
2. If cancelled with less than 4 codes stored, the receiver will only accept the codes programmed up to that point.

There you have it, good luck.

Sensor numbers as of 7-6-02
Net prices.
1997 - 2000 10438853 $ 99.45/$140.87
2001 - 2002 25648293 $90.31

I run two sets of tires, both Goodyear EMT's on the road and I've heard the Firestone (steel in the side walls) problem before but have yet to actually see it.

Tire Sensor & Firehawks

I put on a new set of Firehawks (Run Flats) a month ago because the Goodyear EMT's are without a doubt just about THE WORST TIRE IN THE WORLD!!!!!!

I have absolutely no problems with my tire sensors. Suggest going back to the mechanic who scanned and worked your ECM and have him undo the botch to your programming. Seems to me that no problem before the dealer and now problem after the dealer = dealer generated problem.

Just my humble opinion.

C5 Tire sensors Firehawk

Thanks to to info supplied by " DAD " , we were able to recalibrate the sensors. If only my chevy dealer had nown this it would have been easier. Thanks again DAD.

Great

No problem, glad it helped.

By the way the 2001 - 2002 sensor (25648293) has a new number 25731358 - $46.13 with $8 shipping, gmpartsdirect.com gm parts, auto parts, car parts, chevrolet parts.
