Does anyone have information about the C6 fuel filter location? I heard that it's inside one of the gas tanks. Replacing the filter requires removal of the tank? Also that this would not be covered under warranty which makes the labor to remove/replace the tank critical plus time in the shop etc. Is this just a crazy rumor or on the level? Fuel filters are something that many people like to replace more often than mfg. recommendation. Along with lower octane it seems to me that gasoline quality and uniformity has been going down in recent years. Being an oldgoat I'm just used to the old inline filters we all added to augment the inadequate factory ones etc.

HI there,
This is correct, the fuel filter is inside the drivers side fuel tank.
Due to design, it should last 200,000 miles with not a problem.
In some of the higher mileage 2004, which have essentially the same system, I have seen no problems at all.
You are very right about the fuels today, they just are not that good, thank you EPA.

200,000 miles?

I'm kind of curious, how is the filter designed differently (to allow it to go 200K miles between replacement) than say, an ordinary inline fuel filter on a C4 or C5?

I was under the impression that a fuel filter should be replaced every 5,000-10,000 miles?

I guess in theory, the fuel filter would probably have a longer life than the car itself.:D

HI there,
The small cross section of the canister type is part of the reason.
The other part is that conventional filters also absorb water.
Newer filters perform different and have larger cross section area.

When they redesigned the filter system the price of the filter jumped to $38 and I could never find it on my '04 and my manuals only go to '02. I bought the filter for my '98 and decided not to change it until 50,000 because it required the removal of the left muffler. Then I got a wild hair and got the ‘04, which has basically the same tank system as the '05. I guess the starter being under the intake manifold on the Northstar isn't so out of character for today’s designers.
