Last week I got the production code for my C6 Coupe, Precision Red/Cashmere, AT, Nav System, Museum Delivery, and most other options. Should be available late Aug/early Sept 04. Order placed 7/19/04.

Question: Can you guys recommend some awesome drives to me? I'd especially like to hear about places with Corvette/Chevy historical significance if you know of any.

Starting with the Museum Delivery in Bowling Green, I plan to take a 2-4 week odyssey cruise around the USA in my C6 (my first vacation in 8 years!) I want to hit some great cruising spots, including a drive down Pike's Peak (Zora Duntov set a new record driving down it in a pre-production 1956 Chevy during a '55 promotion). I also remember seeing a reply to a post on this forum mentioning a 12 to 20 mile (?) stretch in North Carolina with lots of curves (called the Devil's ???????... help, anyone?)

Are you thinking of the Tail of the Dragon? I'm thinking it's in Western North Carolina around Asheville. I could be way off, but that's all I really know about it. Hope it helps.

All the best,
-Zach

That's it! Dragon, Devil...I knew it was one of those.... :)

When I lived in Florida and drove my '78 to Indianapolis I always enjoyed northern Georgia and eastern Tennessee. Pretty scenery and once off the highway some nice curvy mountain roads to drive.

Major C6 Problems

For those interesred in the 2005 Corvettes, or may have ordered one, don't plan on receiving it anytime soon.
There are major problems with the assembly line because this car is 3 1/2 wider than privious years, meaning: every car is damaged.
The best is yet to come...there are no less that 7 design defaults thus far.
There are 700 assemblyline workers in Bowling Green, KY., because of these numerous problems, there were 500 engineers on hand along with the Vice President of G.M. to solve these issues. As of this Friday (yesterday) it was discovered that the seal in the rear window leaks.
Although 300 came of the line, only 7 went out to dearlers. Mass production was geared-up for the first week in October (I have the shop schedule), it looks like G.M. won't be in full swing until the late part of said month at the earliest.
As the readers can see, I have a few assembly-line workers there and I get an up-date once a week: so if anyone wishes to contact me for additional information or future up-dates, feel free to do so.

Dave

Congrats ! ! ! ! If you go to the web and search for Deal's Gap or go through one of the search engines and enter 'Tail of the Dragon', you'll get some awesome info including a map & driving directions. I'm contemplating doing the 'Tail, but I wonder if I'm ready for it. I guess that means I'm not. . .

Huh?

Excuse me, I don't mean to hijack this thread, but the post by Law107 doesn't exactly make sense. I thought the C6 was an inch or so narrower than previous years, along with being about 5 inches shorter. Every new vette coming off the line damaged? That sounds like pure unadulterated BS.

Rob or HIb, can you shed some light on this?

Sir,

For whatever your opinion and only an opinion is worth, you are entitled to it.
In my trade we deal with undisputed facts, not rumors or hopeful wishes.
If you still have any reservations, please optain a copy of the "Shop Committee Report," by Tim Gensler, Chairman, for direct evidence (if you can understand scheduled work orders).
I am not trying to sell anyone anything; just trying to assist those you may have put a downpayment on one to expect delays and service problems with the new the C6.
I am also happy that I didn't list the major problems that haven't been remedied, and the correct date when these autos will be safe to purchase without defect.
Since you do not appreciate the facts of life, it is no benifit for me to post here in the future.
If YOU are an early buyer, good luck with your lemon!

I'm currently working on a project @ the Bowling Green Assembly Facility and haven't seen 500 Engineers or a GM VP working on the assembly line.

As far as the width issue, low #'s of C6's were assembly for several months with C5 production prior to the July Shutdown/C6 Conversion.

I do know that GM wants to make sure when the C6's are shipped their customers are totally satisfied with the quality of the Corvettes they receive.

Back to the C6 Odyssey Trip: After your Museum Delivery in Bowling Green, head west toward the Grand Canyon, then California: South 2 North, back east through the Upper Rocky Mountains, Bad Lands, Upper Michigan Peninsula, Allegheny Mountains, down through the Smoky Mountains then back home to Florida.

That would burn a few days off your 2-4 week vacation . . .

Enjoy your C6 and what ever Odyssey Trip you take! :upthumbs

Later . . . . . .

FACT is that the 2005 Corvette (72.6" wide) is 1 inch narrower than the C5 (73.6" wide) car. If this fact is not accurate in your report it's hard to believe much else.

It's obvious to me that this LAW107 guy has some kind of ulterior motive going. He has dropped enough hints along the lines of "hope you guys who foolishly put down a deposit have lots of time to wait for your piece of junk" that I'm wondering if he works for any of the Corvette's competition in some capacity.

He has posted CR@P just like this on several other forums, and has been IMMEDIATELY bashed by knowledgeable industry figures such as Hib Halverson, and in some cases has had his (rhymes with bullspit) cleaned up (removed) by the forum moderator.

All of his garbage should be deleted from this forum, and he should be banned for trying to start rumors.

Go away, LAW107...all of us see right through your pathetic lies.
1) This car is 3 1/2" wider ... untrue; it's NARROWER.
2) Every car is damaged ... oh, really? EVERY one? Categorically?
3) 500 engineers? Completely unbelievable.
4) What's the VP of GM doing in the picture? (I'm assuming he's talking about the #2 in command at GM, not some VP in charge of Engineering, Production, etc., instead, "The VP of GM" Geez, I guess if you're going to lie, lie big.
5) Although 300 came off the line, only 7 went to dealers...the truth is, none of them have gone out to dealers yet.

At the very least, I request the forum moderator clean up my hijacked thread.

Dream Drive in Sierra Nevada

Reno to South Lake Tahoe. California Highway 89 south to Highway 88. East through Alpine County to US 395. South on 395 through Bishop, Lone Pine (Mt. Whitney area). Plenty of side trips west into Sierra, east into the White Mountains. Then loop east through Death Valley toward Las Vegas and then on to Grand Canyon. You'll never forget this trip! Your C6 will be in its element. And hardly any traffic. Watch your speed on HWY 395. Otherwise, have a blast.
Obviously, do it in reverse if you are looping the west south to north.

Awesome! Thanks, Satchel! Sounds like you've driven this route several times. Is any part of your route on the Pacific Coastal Highway? If not, do you happen to know the hwy number of the PCH?

Thanks to all so far who have contributed to my odyssey thread with your favorite driving paths.

Dave,

Help me out here....

2004 Corvette
Overall Height: 47.7 inches (coupe) 47.8 inches (vert)
Overall Length: 179.7 inches
Overall Width: 73.6 inches
Wheelbase: 104.5 inches

2005 Corvette
Overall Height: 49.1 inches (coupe)
Overall Length: 174.6 inches
Overall Width: 72.6 inches
Wheelbase: 105.7 inches

Where did the "3 1/2 wider" come from?

Are these published numbers incorrect? Everything I see here leads me to believe that the C6 is in fact one inch smaller in width, and at least 5 inches shorter in length.

You have a very good point here. I will call my clients in Bowling Green today and come back with your answer.

All the information that I posted was verified from both clients working on the assembly line. The only thing I can think of is that the C6 spec were changed. But whatever the reason is, I'll get back to you and the group.
By the way, it is also my understanding that this car (C6) is 3 years ahead of it's time.

The pacific coast hiway is highway 101, and the Oregon Coasti s very beautiful. And look up the Oregon Coast Corvette Club in Newport Oregon. Have a nice trip. I plan on a nice long trip also when I pick up my vert. Will be all southern states, including Florida.

I highly doubt that C6 specifications would change by 3 inches in size so close to production. These are issues that are worked out very early in the design phase - not at the onset of production.

In the future, please verify that your information is 100% accurate prior to posting.

The purpose of this thread was to discuss ideal locations to drive a C6. Not to discuss rumored production problems.

On that note, I think this thread has served its purpose and should be closed.
