Hi everyone.
I've got a big problem.

I have the opportunity to get a great deal on a 2003 50th anniversary coupe but I'm torn. Should I hold out for a new C6 coupe in the spring or snap this one up.

I love both cars but I have the feeling that the anniversary model could hold it's value better and may someday be a collectors car. It's basically new, some guy won it in a lottery a year ago and has not driven it. It has 95 miles on it.

HELP ME !!!

It really depends on the price of the 03 AE.. what are they asking for it?

BTW - the 03 AE is next on my list, I'm just going to wait another few years. The prices will fall.

I'm up in Canada. The MSRP for this car in 2003 was $79,000 (Canadian) and I could likely get it now for $48,000 (Canadian).
MSRP on a new C6 coupe with no options is $67,700 (Canadian).

After buying 2 cars in their first year of production (83 Honda Prelude and 86 Toyota turbo 4x4 truck) I have made a commitment to myself never to buy either first or second year modles. My best vehicles are usually have been in production 3 or more years. It seems that it takes a couple of years to work out the bugs. Go for the AE if it meets all your requirements in my opinion and if you want it to go faster spend the extra money on upgrades for additional horsepower. - Ron

:D C-5 if the price is right.....Headlights have a problem on the C-6 { Can't seem to get the Headlights to fold in } Must be some kind of problem with them....Maybe GM will get it worked out.....Good Luck

doubt the AE will become a "highly desirable collectible" - they made way too many of them - so, if you are thinking of buying the AE just to make money in the future I would say you are wasting your money

I agree.

I'd go with the C6, and you can pick up a roadster if you wait long enough. I'd be happy with the coupe too!

If you are buying for future value good luck. You are going to have to wait a long time for the value to increase. Just look at the Pace cars, Anniversary Editions, ZR-1's that were bought for investment purposes and never reached purchase price before being sold. Just look at the auction news and see the ones that are bringing big bucks. They are very unique or 30-40 years old. If you are looking for an investment try the stock market. Better yet buy the Vette you like drive it and keep it up and enjoy it.

Forget the investment and decide on what will give you the most pleasure. I personally like the looks of the C5 better than the C6 and the AE color is awsome! But the C6 has a few more ponies and some suspension and transmission improvements that are worth considering.

Maybe to early to tell. Albeit not very likely, GM could hold C6 model production for only a couple of years. That would certainly drive the C6 value up.

Nevertheless, The AE will hold up nicely, specially if the production numbers are relatively low. I am one who thinks that the current mood and crazy atmosphere in the car collection's market is ridiculous and outrageous. I know it is based on supply and demand, but 1970 Dodges at $90,000 + entirely makes no sense. I understand that a few of us would like to own again the car that we grew-up with (in my case, a 1961 Impala), but in a lot ways, the majority of the people "driving up" the old muscle cars prices are just trying to waste their money on something. Some cars would really hold up past the century, but most would only be of value to those who are emotionally attached to theirs.

Try to negotiate a great price on the C5. They are plentiful and the market is ripe. Never buy anything that you can't turn around and sell tomorrow for a profit if your are looking at the investment angle. Otherwise , just drive the car and use the depreciation as experience points. Cars in general are lousy investments.Corvettes are better than most because there is an eager market. However, it's only worth what someone is willing to spend. I'm sure a lot of people would like to be in your predicament C5 or C6? Good luck..........

Like buying artwork I'd say buy the one that rings your bell regardless of "investment potential". The problem today is that a great many vettes are being bought and kept perfect specifically as investments. Back in the mid to late 60's nobody really thought about this or expected the huge appreciation. Therefore, very few cars were maintained low mile or in pristine condition etc. Betcha many many C5 AE's are sitting in garages with almost no miles specifically for investment reasons. There will be a glut on the market years from now when people try to sell them. If I buy a C6 it will be driven everyday. It will get rock chips and door nicks and little dings here and there. It will be a high mile car. I just don't get the concept of buying a car and not driving it. There is no reason to expect the future to repeat the past in terms of high prices for certain years of vettes. The whole situation is different now. What a delicious predicament to be in.......either car will be fun and fast. og

:) I agree with Old Goat......You can't take the Vette with you when you are gone.....so saving it is only for the guy or gal who comes along after you are six feet under and saying thanks for not putting the miles on it......and you won't even be able to say your welcome when he does....;)

I wouldn't go for either. I would go for a C5 with the magnetic ride option. The 50th's aren't going to have that much more of a premium than other C5's because they made so many of them.

If I really had to choose, I would go C6 with the Z51.

Thanks for all the input.
I plan on driving the 50th model just like I would the C6; not storing it as future potential. I'd likely be dead by the time it reached any kind of collector value.

HOWEVER... here's the question. In the year 2015 which car will be worth more....a 2003 C5 50th or a 2005 C6. I mean the C5 is brand new right now and I could literally save $18,000.00 Canadian...that's like $17 bucks American.

Cheers,

Welcome to the :CAC good to have a fellow Calgarian.;) I would get the C5 AE. You will only drive it 6-7 months a year so you might as well get a collector or "special" edition one. A big bonus is with a collector edition or special you can get collector insurance from Baker insurance Brokers. It was half the cost of regular insurance. They go by appraised value of the car and they are the only one here to pay out full appraised value no BS if something happened to it!
Personaly I like C5's better, I had the choice of a new C6 but I picked a Zo6/Z16 CE. The AE is a gorgeous Vette and at only 95 miles on her thats brand new, seems like a good deal too me.:beer
