c6 shifter in c5?

My son got me a 2008 shifter and c-6 shift knob and the shifter linkage/stick. It looks like I need a different shift boot as well, because the old one isn't wide enough for the new one.

Does it have shorter throws? It does seem tighter, and the rubber bushing seems to snap it back into place for neutral, also the new knob seems ergonomically super.

Is this really worth the expense and hassle to change it?

Thanks,

Bluemill

A C6 has a shorter shift throw but about the same shift effort as C5.

Understand that a portion of the C6's reduction in throw and effort comes from changes inside the C6 version of the T56 six-speed so, if you install a C6 shifter in a C5 but not the C6 six-speed you can't have all the benefits. With a shifter swap, you can expect a modest decrease in shift throw--but not as much as the same shifter has in a C6 because the C5 does not have the transmission revisions--and a noticeable increase in shift effort--again, because the C5 lacks the transmission revisions.

That said, you might be able to mitigate (but not eliminate) the increase in shift effort which comes with a C6-to-C5 shifter swap by changing lubricants to a synthetic GL4 gear lubricant such as Red Line D4 ATF.

I thought I've seen positive comments regarding the conversion of the C6 shifter to the C5...or maybe its the C6 Z06 shifter. Of course the comments are in that OTHER forum so its all relative :D

Hib...is there much difference if any between the C6 and C6 Z06 shifters?

There may, indeed, be positive comments about the swap.

My earlier post was not an opinion of the swap. I only covered some facts about C6 shifters in C5s.

As for the specific differences between C6 base and C6 Z06 shifters, I can't answer that. Sorry.

there are a lot of positive comments about the C6Z shift knobs because the C5Z is square and a pain to hold while shifting.

The only differences I have seen betwen the C6 and C6 Z06 shifter assemblies are that the C6 (non Z06) shifter assembly bolts to the torque tube with rubber bushings, and the C6 Z06 bolts to the torque tube with solid bushings. The internals, plastic coupler, lever, and shift knob are all the same visually.
