Tom, I think that was directed towards me since I said (before editing my post) that NO Z06's WERE EVER convertibles. Apparently, some of the C2 Z's were, unbeknownst to me. Hence, that's why he had that part boldfaced in red. I since went back and qualified my post and put the lil' "Thank you CHL" at the bottom of it.

We're happy you asked and just as happy we were able to help you keep from getting screwed. All of us 'true' vette people are always trying to keep people honest. Here's an eBay auction that I emailed the guy about. Needed to keep him honest and/or fill him in some basic facts he has mixed up.

The error? among a few misquoted things, the biggest being that his car is "an L88" model. NOT!!! (Interestingly enough to me, he didn't bother to post my email to him nor even update/correct his listing. My trust of that seller is now zero.)

Keep looking. You'll find one that fits you perfectly. Never feel bad passing up "The One", because another "One" will show up not too much later, guaranteed.

Evolution 1980...

Thanks for all the advice and i learned something today. I had a 1980 Corvette and no longer have it and have now decided it was time again for me to get another newer Corvette , i am leaning towards an '06 but can change my mind if the right one comes along other than the 'o6..

If you know all this already, forgive the repeat.

In the early 1960's, an option was available to order a race ready Corvette from the factory. It was RPO Z06. Chevrolet did not openly support racing, and this was a way to offer a suitable car for club racers. Almost all were hardtops. There were apparently a very few that were made as convertibles. But convertibles do not make as stiff a race car.

The C5 came out in 1997, with engine power soon rated at 350HP. In 1998, the convertible was available with the same engine. In 1999, the fixed roof coupe (FRC) was offered. It was conceived to be a lower cost, lower optioned performance Corvette. In 2001, the C5 fixed roof coupe was fitted with a higher output engine, (up to 405HP) some different wheels, brake cooling ducts, etc. It was called the Z06 similar to the 1963 version. There were very limited options available with this car. It was for the "performance enthusiast". ALL factory Z06's were the FRC type, although you can get an aftermarket company to make you a convertible if you have a fat wallet.

The C6 came out in 2005 with about 400HP. It was available as a coupe or a convertible. In 2006, the C6 Z06 was produced as a 505HP coupe.

The base C6 is no slouch when it comes to performance. The Z06 just takes up that much higher.

The C5 Z06 did come in white for one year in '01 and it was discontinued after that. I think white 'Vette's are awesome but I'm biased.

Probably doesn't want a bunch of publicity from the magazines and such. He's probably gotta sell it before his divorce and doesn't want the old lady finding out about it. She's probably got a shark herself...as a lawyer. Yeah, that's probably it.

i went there. i drove the c5z06 and the c6 Z51. i ended up absolutely hating the c6. it has a lot more power lower in the rev range, but the overall feel of the car, even with the z51 package is rolley-polley and numb. when i went home from there, i was really grateful to have the c5z06 in the garage.

now, the c6z06 is a different story. it's still a tad numb, but the suspension (while floaty) makes the car more acceptable for a c5z06 driver.

so, if you aren't caught up in the power hype, you might serve yourself well to buy a c6 and spend some time dialing in the suspension to get it where you want it to be. out of the box, the new c6s feel like cadillacs.

I think that has a lot to do with marketing,, if you think about it who are the vast majority of the people out there that can really afford a new C-6? Baby Boomers: They are the most financially able to afford this wonderful car. Even though many folks younger have bought one. So ride and Comfort is a really big issue.

I agree completely. I hear people say they are buying a new car as an investment, and think they are either foolish investors or are lying to their wives/husbands.
I am restoring a 1968 Dodge Charger RT with original 440 and four-speed. The previous owner paid $4700 for it new in 1968 and it may be worth $30-40K when I finish... BUT, inflation has taken all that increase and more. AND, this is an exceptional car, not the average Dodge.
A knowledgeable, careful investor can make money buying old cars, but don't ever buy a new car as an "investment" (you might as well buy beanie babies).

The purpose of the Corvette is to enjoy it NOW. For some people that may mean parking it in a heated garage and looking at it a lot, but for me that means DRIVING!!

I wish i lived closer to you to see the '06 Z06 in action. I looked at a 2002 Z06 this morning..

It is white with convertable top, 32,000 miles and looks in good condition, what all do i need to know if i get an older Z06...

Like what to look for before buying? oh the asking price is $ 33,000

I put in my order for a new Z06 and will have to sell my black on black 2002 Z06 (with regrets). It has less than 15,000 miles, brand new Eagle F1s, and I need $32K--probably worth $33 according to Kelly blue book. It is in western Kentucky.
