C6/Z06 Shifter goes in Saturday

Yes, I agree- Fella in my club just paid a lot of $ to repaint his C5 vert.
It took over a month to get the job done.
He took it back twice for major flaws in the paint.
And then they put the rear emblem on off centered and won't fix it.
(He is talking to his lawyer at this time)

Subwoofer made all the diff. in theworld with the stock bose C5 system.
I added a nice beefy amp and a 10" sub to the rear compartment with a stealth box. Allows me to put the carpet and compartment covers back on. S o its a nice hidden addition.

Just for grins and giggles, I replaced the front twiddler speakers today with Inifinity 32.5 speakers. Crossovers fit between the BOSE eq box and the door subs. Held in with velcro. Wires connected up nice and neat and it does sound cleaner and has better high end now.

Was not able to get it out of the garage today to hear it on the road, but I know its a great improvement.

The ipod and XM radio share a cable that plugs into each one's headphone/line out jack. I guess with some cable splitters, I could plug them both in at once, but might fear signal loss. Its easy to just unplug one and plug in the other. (or leave one at home if I know I will just be listening to the other)
XM sits in my center glovebox and the iPod has its own mount off the side of the HVAC.

How is GM Parts Direct on shipping? Nothing against the company but I've just consistantly found great unit prices thru them tacked on with extreme shipping costs. (and if I were to order 4 or 5 smaller parts, there is a base shipping and handling cost on each one, even though its all tossed in the same box and the marked postage is no where near what they charged me)
ANYHOW - YMMV hahahaha

Found out a bit about gmpartsdirect.com. The site is owned by Flow Chevrolet in NC. Here in Fayetteville,NC there is a Flow Buick dealer. I went in to see if they could price match the internet price for me here so I could pick it up local and maybe save on some of those shipping costs. I found out the prices shown for the shifter parts (shifter, knob and screw) are the dealer prices for the parts. That is why there is a shipping and handling charge on each part even if they are shipped together. It is how they get their profit. The best the dealer in Fayetteville would offer me was the list price. So, I ended up ordering from the website but with the added expense of tax since I live in NC. All together it came to about $220 for everything.

I'll be putting mine in this weekend.

But I do have a question...does the knob click down onto the shaft? It appears so from a test fit but I am apprehensive to push it down harder until I actually do my install for fear I won't be able to get the knob off to fit my shift boot.

yes, the knob slides down onto the shifter far enough to put the thumb screw into the side to secure it. Don't put it on till you have the shift boot on, FYI.

A stock C5 shift boot will have trouble getting around the neck of the shift knob. I ordered a custom boot that had a wider neck.
I imagine the stock boot will work, but you will need to do some stretching and pulling to get it over the knob's retainer ring. (put the shift boot over the shifter, install the knob, then invert the boot over the knob and pull up until it slides up over the upper retainer ring.)

hope that makes sense - i had to do it before my custom boot came in

Did you end up installing a stock C6 shifter boot? If so, did you get it from Fred Beans, too? What is the part number for that? My interior is black. Are you happy with the performance of the shifter at this point? I have an 04 I'd like to do this to. I bought my car new and have been disappointed with the shifter from day one, but can't get myself to buy an aftermarket shifter because of the shift difficulty and noise.

I had Auger Resources make me a custom C5/C6 boot.
Mine was the first - but they now offer it on their web site.

$40

Ive been real happy with mine. Much more comfortable. My elbow no longer leaves a dent in my armrest. And it looks TONS better than stock.

I have purchased the C6 Z06 shifter from Fred Bean and the custom shift boot from Auger. Do I need anything else to do the install other than tools and patience? Is there a good set of pictorally illustrated instructions on the net somewhere to help me with the install? I want to do it right the first time. Anything you can share about your install will be appreciated.

In the picture of our first post, it looks like you may have replaced the internal shifting part. Is this a C6 Z06 part as well? Did swapping out this part help improve the shifting? Do you by chance have the current part number?
