Where is the CAGS and how do I disconnect it?
First, I'd get one of the CAGS bypass kits from MidAmerica, etc., and install it. If you simply disconnect the CAGS wiring on a 96 (your car right?), you will get service codes set (the system looks for correct resistance in the circuit, so something must be plugged into it).

The wiring is on the left side of the trans. (updated side correctly - thanks)

You will like the ability to shift yourself. The CAGS eliminator kits are great and are not expensive. It is a simple do it yourself job.
