Calling Electrical Wizes - Charging Problems

Well, atleast I'm getting good at taking apart the alternator.

I will crack her open and see if I can find the bum diode.

This is the orginal, not the one you bought, right?

Check my link above for a good step-by-step.

If you find a bad diode you'll replace the rectifier as a unit. All the diodes should be a matched set.

Well, it appears that I have a bad rectifier. One of the diodes is loose. I was confused at first b/c one of them was giving readings intermitently. After awhile, I figured out that my VOM probes were causing the contact to wiggle enough to have the diode in contact occasionally. So hopefully I can find a replacement tomorrow.

Weird.

I went and checked all four cars and all of them read ~28-30 V but all I have is a cheap $10 voltmeter with only a 500 and 200 Volt scale. I don't think all four alternators are bad but I also don't think I have 30 VAC out of the alternator on all four cars either.

I don't think I'm crazy...

Perhaps your meter reads like mine?

Yeah, it does. I completely understand what you're saying about the AC voltage. I have a pretty low-end multimeter, so perhaps that could be the cause.

In anycase, one of the diodes was disconnected, so I need a new rectifier. HOPEFULLY that solves the issue. I really don't want to spend any more $$$ on this.

Well, I just ordered a new rectifier from the big box auto store. $38 and it comes on Monday. Then I looked up an auto electronics place in the phone book... They had one in stock and charged me $10!

Anyway, the rectifier fixed the issue so far!!! Now I'm going to wash the vette, go cancel the order, and hopefully shred some rubber!
